easier said than done. first you can't help someone that doesn't want help. second, many families don't have the means and resources for it, especially if it means institutional care. home care can be beyond many families as well.

Question - if we're going to treat the homeless/mentally ill as fully capable of making their own rational decisions about every action they take, does that mean we can abolish the "insanity defense"?

If a homeless person kills someone, don't blame it on drugs or mental illness! Mamdani says they are fully sane and rational!

BTW...the insanity defense already doesn't exist, for the most part. Very few can use it. Thank John Hinckley Jr for that. It really pissed people off that he didn't get sent to prison.

Yup. A few of these homeless do not do well in a structured environment of a shelter. And a few don't trust being in such places and choose to be on the street.
