THIS MAY MAKE YOUR DAY!

Vermont State Rep. Fred Maslack has read the Second Amendment to the U.S.
Constitution, as well as Vermont's own Constitution very carefully, and his
strict interpretation of these documents is popping some eyeballs in New
England and elsewhere.

Maslack recently proposed a bill to register "non-gun-owners" and require
them to pay a $500 YEARLY fee to the state. Thus Vermont would become the
first state to require a permit for the luxury of going about unarmed and
assess a fee of $500 for the privilege of not owning a gun. Maslack read the
"militia" phrase of the Second Amendment as not only the right of the
individual citizen to bear arms, but as 'a clear mandate to do so'. He
believes that universal gun ownership was advocated by the Framers of the
Constitution as an antidote to a "monopoly of force" by the government as
well as criminals. Vermont's constitution states explicitly that "the people
have a right to bear arms for the defense of themselves and the State" and
those persons who are "conscientiously scrupulous of bearing arms" shall be
required to "pay such equivalent.."

Clearly, says Maslack, Vermonters have a constitutional obligation to arm
themselves, so that they are capable of responding to "any situation that
may arise."

Under the bill, adults who choose not to own a firearm would be required to
register their name, address, Social Security Number, and driver's license
number with the state. "There is a legitimate government interest in knowing
who is not prepared to defend the state should they be asked to do so,"
Maslack says.

Vermont already boasts a high rate of gun ownership along with the least
restrictive laws of any state .... it's currently the only state that allows
a citizen to carry a concealed firearm without a permit.
This combination of plenty of guns and few laws regulating them has resulted
in a crime rate that is the third lowest in the nation.

" America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system,
but too early to shoot the bastards."

This makes sense! There is no reason why gun owners should have to pay taxes
to support police protection for people not wanting to own guns to defend
themselves. Let them contribute their fair share and pay their own way.
Sounds reasonable to me! Non-gun owners require more police to protect them
and this fee should go to paying for their defense!

Ya' need to go back and read my post just before yours.

MILLIONS of people use the guns that you say are okay to call "assault weapons." And for the reasons I said. Mostly target shooting. And hunting too. More all the time. Really. They do. I'm not making it up, nor am I exaggerating.
Good for them, though i'm not sure what your point is in mentioning this. I'm fully aware that people like the guns. If they didn't, there wouldn't be a market for them. What i pointed out, and the comment i assume you were responding to, is that you've not given a reason why they are necessary. People no doubt would enjoy shooting automatic weapons also, but as you've pointed out more than once, automatic weapons are, for all intents and purposes, banned. And why would that be? Could it be because they provide greater firepower than any civilian would ever need?

So again, nobody's provided an example as to why semi-automatics are necessary to any gun owner in terms of self defense or for hunting purposes. And if my suspicions are correct, nobody makes that argument because any reasons they could give would likely shoot down the theory that they don't provide greater firepower than more traditional weapons.

So ultimately, you're angry that someone wants to take away your toys. I'm angry that people use your toys to go shooting up elementary schools. I'm not sure who ultimately has the moral high ground there, but i'm more than comfortable with where i stand on the subject.

Soooo... you confused a popular, low-powered semi-automatic CIVILIAN weapon with a machine gun. Do ya' think that just maybe I might have a point about this whole "mis-information" and "misunderstanding" thing? Your ignorance and confusion about this is pretty much helping me make my original point! Cool!
The crux of the matter is whether or not someone being able to get off 30 rounds without needing to stop and reload constitutes a greater potential threat than someone being able to get off 5 or 6 rounds before needing to stop and reload. I don't need to be an engineer with Ford to know that an F150 is going to get worse gas mileage than a Ford Focus, so just because i didn't know the difference between an M16 and an AR15 doesn't mean i'm ignorant to the basic math and logic that buttresses my point.

Oh... and BTW.... that whole little side discussion we are having about whether or not the word "data" is plural? That was intended as an inside joke between you and me! A heavily disguised attempt to say behind the scenes "it's okay, brother, we all have the same interests at heart when it comes down to it." I challenge you to figure out where I got it from and who I am referencing when I say "mutual friends." I cannot believe that you turned that on me in the smarmy, condescending way that you have tried to do. I may have been a bit vague, but I expected more from you there. Shoulda known....
Wow, where'd that come from? First off, yeah, i'm quite confident that i know who you were referring to. But more than that, and the reason i even responded to the whole "data" comment (which had nothing whatsoever to do with this discussion of ours) was simply to let you know that i caught on to your reference. No more/no less. I didn't add a smiley of any kind because i didn't think it would be necessary. But rest assured, my comment was meant to be a light-hearted one.

Quote:
Tell your friends this, if you actually have any. The discussion between us on this is over. Probably on most other things to. Post to your heart's content.
I realize i've made some generalized comments that you may or my not have taken offense at. Since we're both pretty passionate about this, frankly, it works both ways. But individually i believe i've tried to be respectful towards you.

That's as far as i'll go on that.

An example is all you need. OK, no problem.

Doove's little little boy, doove jr. grows up in the waste lands of the inner city aquiring a prohibited topic problem (and probably a few genetic mental disorders along the way). Not able to find a job due to all of the liberal policies that have destroyed the economy and wanting to feed his "problem", he has to resort to robbing people. He ventures out into the suburbs where the pickens are better. He choose a house owned by Big GP. Little doove jr enters the house. He doesn't realize that GP is home with his family sleeping. Unexpectedly, GP wakes up to the sounds of little doove jr tripping over the piles of money GP has laying around. GP grabs his single shot pistol and heads into the hallway. There GP see's little dove jr. and takes aim and fires. A miss! GP needs to goto the range and practice more. Little doove jr, reaches into his wasteband and pulls out his "illegal" semi automatic pistol and is able to shoot Big GP and his entire family while GP was busy trying to reload. If only GP was allowed to own a semiautomatic pistol, he could have had a few more shots to defend himself from scumbags.

Let's make this as simple as possible. All it requires is a yes or no answer. Not a sentence, not a paragraph, not a novel. Just a simple YES OR NO. This is so simple, maybe even doove can handle this. OKAY, here it comes, and remember..... YES OR NO.

Can you acknowledged that guns, in the hands of qualified and trained individuals subject to background checks, prevent crime and improve public safety?
