Default If the roles were reversed?????

So I have seen countless threads about hobbyists "loaning" a provider money and then her not paying it back. When this happens there is several harsh comments about the type of person she is and that the guy should have known better. But what if the roles were switched.

Two weeks ago, a hobbyist attended my poker game. He is well known on the board and well known in the poker community in San Antonio. He lost and wanted to keep playing. I loaned him the money (which is common in the poker world) on his word that after the game he would then go to the ATM and bring me back the 300$ that I loaned to him. After he left, he said his ATM card wasn't working and could he please pay me the next day. I said "sure no problem, but i have to have it because I have to pay my rent" He said thank you and no problem. The next day he tells me late afternoon he is sick and will leave the house in a little bit to meet me. Then he disappears. No answering of texts or calls. About three days of me trying to get a hold of him, I finally get a response his phone saying that this is his wife and that is in hospital. However, the text patterns were identical to his way of texting but ok.. I give him the benefit of doubt. And say ok. Mind you the whole time he has been in the hospital he has logged into ECCIE every day, so he still can't send me a text telling me what's going on. Now it's been two weeks, he doesn't answer texts, messages, pms, NOTHING. I have been patient and I have been nice. I have explained to him that I cannot afford to just give away 300$.

So what do you do if the roles are reversed?

If this would have been different circumstances I wouldn't have, however, in the poker world it is very common and I am very particular about who I loan money to. If he hadn't been so highly talked about I wouldn't have.

Did you just pay for a BFE? Ok, no kidding, outing is a no-no, baseball bat to one kneecap should be acceptable, but most likely frowned upon, visiting his place of work, got a mutual acquaintance in trouble.

Let the other girls know, set up a sting when he sets up an appointment, get watch, car, wallet and pictures of him in a compromising position.

Hmm, that may be frowned upon, but should be acceptable.

Really, I don't know Jez, I'm still out $1400 from a bad loan to a local provider, and mine isn't even close to the worst I have heard.

Baseball bat - check. At work - check. Bad loans - no check.

Good luck.

Some may say this happened in the poker community, and not the eccie community, but I think it transcends both communities. I hope that he reads this and realizes the bind he is putting you in. I just hope you get paid back asap.

Jed,

I agree that this is apart of both communties but because it did happen between two people that happened to be a member of this board, I wanted some opinions. I did not post his name for that very reason. This is NOT a client of mine. He is just a member here and a poker player. But thank you everyone for your input. not sure how to handle this since he has cut off all contact with me regarding this money.

That sucks sorry jez. I hate nothing more than a man who makes bets he cant keep. I had a man in vegas tell me if rolled a hard 8 he'd give me a ball chip well I roll e 44 and he collects his money and walks off without even acknowledging me. I'll never be like at guy hopefully if I say or bet something best believe I'm following thru or keeping in contact at the very least

Jez, it's an unfortunate situation! Some people just take advantage of a good person! Just like some of the hobbyists that loan money to providers and never get paid back...you may just have to chalk it up to an expensive lesson learned. It's not the amount of money...it's the principle! You TRUSTED him to do the right thing...but, obviously, he's decided that he doesn't owe you anything...or he's just a loser.

I've had many EXPENSIVE lessons myself! At the end of the day...I can only blame myself for making poor choices...no matter where my heart was...I should have listened to my gut instinct.

All you can do is give him a little more time, and if he doesn't make good on his OBLIGATION...then, post his info. If that's allowed here.

I sure did...when I had my wallet stolen a few years back...by a well known Austin provider and her loser boyfriend! These are just sad people with no conscience! Well, you know what they say...no good deed goes unpunished!

I say neither a borrower nor a lender be. That goes for provider or hobbyist. There is an equation here that works: money for services. Don't mess with what works.

That sucks he should be ashamed ! If it were a provider , you can bet it would be in alerts . But not being hobby related , I'm not sure what you should do . I think I would probably post his handle and shame him into making good .

General rule to live by is never loan money and expect it to be paid back. You can hope but expecting will leave you disappointed. That being said I am guilty of making the same type of mistake and loaning money I could not afford in an effort to be nice. I guess sometimes we all need a reminder not to be stupid.
