Default snake iin the toilet

This morning I went downstairs, made my coffe and then went to the bathroom to do my business while the coffe was brewing. After I finished my business I pulled the handle down to flush the toilet and it was stiff and would not flush the tank. I opened up the lid of the toilet tank and there was a live 3 foot snake (about an inch thick) coiled around the guts of the tank. Scared the shit of of me (well it would have if there was any left). Somehow I managed not to drop and break the lid to the tank, and slid it back over the tank. I pondered about what to do and then went to the garage and got a hedge clipper with about a 3 foot handle and returned to the bathroom. Sliding the lid back of the toilet I was eventually able to snag the reptile and lift it out of the tank and carry it outside. Yes I then killed it. While trying to snag the thing it had its mouth open and struck at the clippers several times. Hissing also. No fangs that I saw, and no rattlers. The snake was a mottled black and grey color but I don't know what kind it was. My heart was racing and initially I did not know what to do about the snake. My question is how the hell did a snake end up in my toilet tank. I am on a septic system. The house is elevated at least 15 feet higher than the sewer line pipes that go from the house to the septic tank.

Well, if it scared the crap out of you, at least you were in the right place.

Glad that you are ok.

Driller don't know if I'll ever be able to not think of your story, every morning as I take care of my business. Would be interested in knowing how the snake got into the tank also, any issues with an ex-SO/wife?

Could of came in through a window(possibly in the bathroom) or a crack in the wall, etc..... if the tank was partly opened it shimmied( I think thats a word) on in they can squeeze into just about any thing. All animals seek water? At my old place I found one inside the house... and my girlfriend had one in her garage. ( I was like there's not a snake out there, it was) Now, I'm gonna be all on snake alert all day.

Jd,
Without further identification, it could have been a water moccasin or cottonmouth, a venomous snake. There are other water snakes, too. Sounds like it got into the sewer line and was trying to get out or looking for water, and got into your toilet tank through the drain. You might want to completely check your lines for cracks, gaps or holes as there might be others. The other less likely possibility is it got into your house and was looking for water. If you do not have plumbing experience, I would call one and have your drain lines checked. Can you imagine sitting down with that thing in the bowl?

JD,
That reminds me of the time I went into a stall at work and there was a huge brown snake in the toilet. It didn't have any eyes, and as I recall, it had some corn sticking out of it.

All joking aside, that is some scary shit.

From what I hear, if the eyes have round pupils, they are non-venomous.
If they have slits, watch out.

Sorry for the scare. Sorry for the snake also. Catch and release person myself.
