Thanks everyone for the support. Update he still as ignored all attempts to get shops of him. Looks as though he is no better than the providers he as insulted. Just another dirtbag who stole from someone because he didn't know his limits. I can't wait for the next review he posts paying some girl whst he owes me. Then I will post his name.

Jez, your question ("What if the roles were reversed?") is strictly rhetorical, right? The guy is as much a low-life as the provider who fails to pay back a loan. And the bullshit about being sick, and then in the hospital -- as pathetic as the sob stories some of the guys get about the sick kid, the broken-down car, etc. A debt is a debt is a debt, period.

Not piling on here but offering this bit of advice. If you can't afford to loan it or absorb the loss, don't. If you can't pay out at the end of the night or pay rent then you / your business / your game, etc gets a bad rap. Know your limits. Was it "A Bronx Tale" where the old school guy says [paraphrase] you gave that low life $$$ to not bother you for the rest of your life.

I did pay out and i did make rent. That is not the point. I was able to afford to hand him the money. But it was expected to pay out that night.

This does not reflect on me or my game. This is him not paying back money owed. End of story.

I completely agree! No matter what "community" it was done in, a person that would do this in one place will most likely do it in another. I would love to know this guys name so I don't get involved with him. And I would out him since he still refuses to even contact you. I believe at this point it wouldn't even be about the money at all, but about the fact that he's completely ignoring me and (allegedly) lying to me about it. I'm so sorry this has happened to you girl. And I don't believe it was dumb of you to loan him the money, especially if he was well known and spoken highly of. We live and we learn.
On a side note...could you please PM me his handle so I know not to mess with this guy? Thank you.

This is fup wether is part or not of the board. I don't know about lending money to someone who lost and could not stop playing. Hope you get paid and learn from this. As a rule of life when I lend money I consider it a gift cuz I really don't expect to get it back, if I do is a great thing, but I rarely lend mone anymore.

I'm pretty sure that he is logging on, but not saying a word since all of this happened. With that in mind, I'm hoping that you are reading this thread.

I can understand that perhaps you can't pay all that cash up front. So here is my suggestion.
  • Give Jez the cash that you do have (as a sign of good faith). Then, give her something valuable for collateral (something of equal or greater value of the debt). That way Jez will know that you do intend to pay her back. Make sure that you sign a bill of sale for the item. If you fail to pay Jez in an agreed amount of time, then Jez can pawn or sell said item and recover the money she lent you.

Be the bigger man here. Not paying your debt and avoiding her is shameful, and small of you. At least acknowledge that you fucked up and will pay her back.

Sorry you got burned, Jez. But, when someone wants to borrow $$, it's usually because they were irresponsible with money they already had. I saw a list one time about "who to never lend money to." I don't recall all of it but it included:

Family
Friends
Hookers
Gamblers
Dope fiends

Here are a few other rules: don't lend money unless you are a lending institution, like a bank; don't lend money without collateral IN HAND; don't lend money you can't afford to lose.

I occasionally have people ask to borrow money and I evaluate the NEED and the nature of the request. If there is a genuine need, I simply give them an amount I am comfortable with (usually less than requested). It's a gift to them and if they pay it back it's a blessing to me. Another good idea: if someone asks to borrow money for food or rent, and I feel the need is genuine...I take them to the grocery store, and buy groceries, or to the landlord office and pay the rent. I don't just give them cash and hope it goes to the right place.

I have money because I don't lend; I don't need to borrow, because I have money. It's a strategy that has worked for me for decades.

I do understand the loan, but too many poker players are degens. I'd have to really know the guy. When I loan money, it's usually under the assumption that it's gone, if I get paid back, it's a bonus. I have a lot of poker friends, some pretty successful, there are very very few I would loan money to, if they run bad, they turn into complete degens. I've learned my lesson. Luckily most have learned to manage their roll now, and probably should loan me money if anything,

What hobbyist on this board can't come up with $300 if they absolutely need to? I am guessing the number to be very close to zero. So it seems more likely the Borrower does not want to repay the loan, for reasons unspecified.

I agree with johnny, there are extremely few well known hobbiests that cannot produce $$$ if they had the want/need.... It sucks that he was dishonest with you, but I've been in your shoes... Chalk it up to a lesson learned... It will make your life easier not to stress about it. Or blast him and consider that your retribution, and be done with it. There are so few things in life that are truly worth your time and emotional energy... Spend yours on something productive! I hope that the situation resolves itself soon....

JJ- yes he has logged on. Pretty much every day since I have loaned him the money.

I understand that loaning money in a general sense is not a good idea. However, it is common in the poker world among games. I don't loan to everyone. If he wasn't a prominent member and well known in the poker world, I would not have done it.

I am not stressed about this, nor am I wasting energy on it. However, I am not willing to just let it go and say "oh well". I will continue to make efforts to collect. I know he can afford to pay it back. He has 24 reviews of upstanding providers on the higher scale of donations, so I am sure he just doesn't want to pay it back.
