He did, indeed. And Brother Marvin got Frankie Beverly & Maze signed...amongst others. Marvin's willingness to battle Barry Gordy for control of his own sound & a label of his own to discover/develop other artists arguably saved soul music when the sound was beginning to stagnate in the early 70s

Now, now...I don't know that I'd go THAT far! Without a doubt, his recording of, "A Change Is Gonna Come" STILL makes all the hair on my body stand up!
But, Smokey...Barry Gordy...and the Funk Brothers had as much to do with it as Sam. BUT...lol...that's an argument worthy of a couple of cigars and many...MANY scotches at Downing Street some night...preferably between sets of live music!!
