TREME JAZZ

So I just finished watching the first season of Treme and I was really digging the music (especially Kermit Ruffins--just bought three of his albums) and need some advice on putting together a more comprehensive playlist of Treme Jazz. If you are from NOLA, and really know this genre, please give me a few song titles and artists.

I am usually more of a Roadhouse Swing (a little bit different than Big Band Swing) kind of guy, but Treme is winning me over on the creole tradition. Nerd that I am, i will be headed to the library for resources to read (internet is fine, but sometimes you need to feel the heft of the book in your hands) and would like to have a pretty good library of Treme Jazz to listen to as i read up on the history.

If you get a chance, name me some "must listen" music.

The show did a pretty shotty job at actually showing traditional new orleans jazz, but was better prepared to show current local musicians gigging the new orleans song book.

As far as Funk though the show did a great job. Eddie Bo, Prof. longhair, Ernie K. doe. New Orleans is as much a birth place to funk as it is to jazz, and the meters should be treated equally to the beatles.

They then also added several of the normal local gigging funk or brass bands like, Galactic, trombone shorty, dumpstaphunk, rebirth and hot five brass bands.

Good point. Actually up here in Cincy we have a bit of a link to that region and era with King Records and of course the grandfather of modern Funkadelic and Zydeco R&B Bootsy Collins being from here originally here.

Glad you enjoyed 'Treme'. One of the questions we locals have is how well it's been accepted outside of New Orleans.

A primer on the local music scene, eh? Wow, where do you begin - the scene here is so rich and vibrant, with very deep roots.

For a starter, set your browser to WWOZ-FM. They have a live internet stream and a lot of the DJs post their playlists online. Programs you might be interested in are:
- Trad Jazz - weekdaze 9 - 11 am
- New Orleans Music Show - weekdaze 11 am - 2 pm (nothin' but local artist, all genres)
- Contemporary Jazz - weekdaze 4 - 7 pm; Emphasis on 'Comtemporary', but not necessarily local artitsts.

I would also strongly suggest Rebirth Brass Band. They are in the show several times and are from the Treme.
