Bottom Line
Nikki,
For your purposes (visiting friends from out of town), Mi Tierra Cafe is a must. If they don't visit Mi Tierra, they didn't visit San Antonio. Great food, history, art, music, color, lights. Then you have the Bakery - no other TexMex restaurant in Sananto can compare.

Ok, whoever said Taco Cabana gets a spanking! (lol) Thank you all for the input. I forgot all about Don Pedros...it is very good for the price. I ended up giving them:
1. Acenar
2. Paloma Blanca
3. Blanco Cafe

I think Oden is right on the money.
On the low end Blanco Cafe is great. A tourist might not like it because it is so authentic; it isn't the cleanest restaurant in town but they have been here forever and they are really great.
Los Barrios de La Hacienda on RedLand Road is one of my favorite restaurants. Do not sit inside. Can't believe that I would say that with the Texas heat but this is one of the two Mexican restaurants where sitting outside would lose some of the ambiance.
Another good one is La Fogata on Vance Jackson. Again, sit outside.
I don't know what Chuys is but it isn't TexMex. I don't even understand how they stay in business. Their pizza isn't that good, either, just different in a bad way.
Good BBQ in San Antonio, it ain't happening. BBQ in San Antonio is terrible. I have tried them all and none of them are any good. Whatever you tell them, stay away from Bill Miller's. They don't even have a BBQ pit. They

After all these years... Los Barios has continued to hold up the combination of really good Texbet/Mex and price. Their Puffy Tacos are nationally acclaimed... if you're into that. This is a family run business... in the bestTex/Mes tradition... so that makes it special too.
Mi Tierra is an excellent choice for doing the Mercado / Downtown thing... but one in this group that I think has better food with plenty of that SA atmosphere... is right across the interstate from Mi Tierra... called Pico De Gallo
This was one of the first to commit to "healthier" Tex/Mex food... and it tastes great! You can even request "Promise" spread to smear all over those delicious tortillas and they will provide it.
For Bar B Que... I think The County Line out I-10 would be enjoyed by all. They have live music (Texas Style) on Wednesdays... and it's a hoot... crowded... but lots of fun. Some say the BBQ is excellent. Here's a link. http://www.countyline.com/comeseeus....io%20%28I10%29 The music is ON tonight!
Buen provecho, y'all!

I forgot about Los Barrios. I have the cookbook they made and had the owner sign it. Excellent traditional food.

I agree. Didn't know about the live music. If they want BBQ AND the Riverwalk, there's a County Line down there, too -- no music, though.

Nikki my love.....Please, if you knew my friends in real life, they would tell you that when it comes to food, I am the bomb. I always know where to eat, it's a gift.
If they want the atmosphere, Mi Tierra blows. The bakery is good, but the food sucks. But again, the atmosphere is ok. Same goes for anything on the river. Stay away from the food.
I would second a couple of suggestions already mentioned here, both in King William.
Rosario's and El Mirador. At EM, try the Sopa de Lima. It's phenominal.
Also, from the same owner as Rosario's, Acenar which is downtown is good. A little pricier than Rosario's but good, and it's on the river.
If you want to do something on the fly, and certainly a bit cheaper, there are numerous little mom and pop places around that are great breakfast places. Of course, Taco Taco on Hildebrand @ McCullough, ranked as the best tacos in the country by Bon Apetit' Magazine a while back. Personally, I think it's peaked and slid down some, but still way better than anything they will get in PA.
Just up from there on McCullough, is another little place which the name escapes me right now. The original Blanco Cafe isn't far from there either, and is worth the trip. And in the same area, but on S. St. Mary's (by Candlelight Coffee) is El Milagrito. Very good breakfast tacos. Oh, and Taco Haven on the south side.
One more, much more traditional Mexican rather than Tex Mex, is Guijillo's. On Blancoo, on the north side of 410. They make the best Tacos al pastor in town. Really good, very very casual, and inexpensive.
Nope, I lied. One more. If they want to sit outside, La Fonda on Main (not to be confused with the other La Fonda's around town, different owner) has a phenomial patio. It's up on a hilltop, and with the fans, is doable even in summer.

Sorry if I offended anyone, that wasn't my intent.
And the food at La Fonda is good, not great, but the patio makes up for it.

note on The County Line at The Riverwalk. I used to work right across the river from it at Navarro, Every day around 10:00 -- you will see a big truck parked at the bridge. Once the back door is rolled up and away -- you will see food carts galore being unloaded WITH all the cooked BBQ that is made at the restaurant on IH-10 and taken down to the River Walk restaurant. There is an elevator at the bridge in the Starbucks building....
and one restaurant I won't go to anymore is El Chapparal at 1604 and Redland Road. Just didn't like it....

Taz, good list.
I could not agree with you more about Taco Taco. Instead, try Taco Haven on S. Presa.
About La Fonda on Main, be sure to order off the Mexican side of the menu. The Tex-Mex side is pretty forgettable.
You're unfortunately very right about Mi Tierra. Go next door to La Margarita. In general, the food is much better. The seafood dishes are all pretty good and they make good fajitas.
For interior Mexican, Guajillo's is fantastic. There's a tiny place, Cascabel, just south of Rosario's and it's incredible. Then there's the very hip La Gloria at the Pearl Brewery. People who have traveled inside Mexico love it; those who prefer Tex-Mex either don't get it or don't like it.
If you want to talk BBQ, that's another thread.

DaMan, you are totally right on the LaFonda menu advice, and I had forgotten about Cascabel! I haven't made it to LaGloria yet, but it's high on my list.

Tazion, you got me hungry just reading that list. Restaurants are like good providers, they may not be perfect-but there's one thing about each one (maybe two, maybe more) that just leaves a good taste and makes it worth the return visit.
