I Need Your Input...Best Tex-Mex Restaurants In SA
I have friends visiting SA from Pittsburgh at the end of the month. They want to go to the best BBQ & Tex-Mex restaurants in SA or close by. I saw the thread on the best BBQ places...but I would like your opinions on the best Tex-Mex. Thanks!

Chuy's!!! Two locations of which I know -- near 281 & 1604 (been there); and near I-35 & 1604 (haven't been there myself, but heard it's better than the 1st -- which I considered great!)

If you are taking him to the Riverwal, I would say Mi Tierra or Casa Rio. Those are the two places I always take out of town guests to. Kill two birds with one stone. Show them the riverwalk, eat TexMex... There they have pretty much done all there is to do here after that!

Chuy's is NOT Tex-Mex or anything near it! Well maybe in ATX it is. lol
As much as people call Mi Tierra (or the Cortez fam restaurants) tourist traps - you are guaranteed 2 things for out-of-town guests: 1. Ambiance 2. Fresh food - with the high turnover of guests, the food is always fresh. (I order the cabrito w/ the sauce on the side. Never had a bad meal there.)
True Tex-Mex food should be simple, soul food.

Pulllleeeaaaazzzeee to an outsider any good Taco Stand serving Picadillo or Carne Gisada IS the bees knees..
That's what made me stay here when I first discovered Tajano music and food.
But for the perverted gorging maniac I could not think of a better place than the Mc Donalds of TexMex, Taco Cabana !
Now I am running for shelter !! becuz i also love Greek as well...

The way I differentiate between TexMex and Mexican is the difference between Blanco Cafe and Los Barrios. Los Barrios to me epitomizes good solid Mexican food while the Blanco Cafe is clearly TexMex.
For a unique San Antonio taste, I like Ernesto's with his French twist on sauces and fish dishes. If you don't think the French influenced Mexican cooking let me remind you of the French Nuns that invented mole.
But I always eat at the Taco House on San Pedro when I have been away for awhile for the Carne Guisada which to me epitomizes San Antonio.

I also have to say that every tourist I have entertained has enjoyed Mi Tierra and La Margarite. Market Square lives up to their expectations of S.A. and the food at those two staples are a good representation of our fare. Just stay away from Aldocos' on the Riverwalk as that is the foofyiest overpriced bastardization of Mexican food I know.

My choices are: Pico de Gailo, mi tierra, alamo cafe and marthas is not bad, taco cabana is great at 3am. Now pico de gailo does a mean carne guisada (ask for the pork version).
