Affirmative action is pervasive, Tiffani. Indeed, threads like these would serve as a justification for it in many people's minds, because it reinforces their belief that America is full of racists, and therefore less qualified Arican-Americans need to be promoted as a means of compensation for past, present, and even future racism.
Examples of affirmative action are so numerous it is easy to state a few off of the top of my head. Look at the admissions policies of any Ivy League university. An African-American can gain admittance over more qualified whites with significantly lower SAT scores. Look at the promotions policy of any government organization - race is always a factor, and being black will get you promoted over more qualified whites - everyone knows this.
If you have no blacks on a corporate board - watch out, lawsuit is coming, or at least Jesse Jackson or someone like him will show up, claim racism, and get his payoff to go away.
Every local government building project has well publicized rules requiring minority contractors to get 20% or more of the business, and minority watchdog groups monitor things very closely.
We have had affirmative action since the sixties, and enough people in this country voted for Obama to make him President (I'm planning to vote for him, BTW) and yet some people get so much benefit from the few remaining racists out there they claim anyone who offers a different opinion is a KKK member.
If you think there are no Jewish people in the KKK, look up Benjamin Judah.
I would love to live in a color-blind society, because being white confers virtually no advantage. In today's society, we are supposed to be color-blind - except when we are talking about too many white people in this or that job, then we should notice race.
As far as being Jewish is concerned, our contributions to society are so great (1/3 of all Nobel Prizes, for instance) that small minded anti-semites are just a joke to us. Usually, the white people I deal with never even get around to asking me if I am Jewish - because I'm good at what I do.
Now that America is a fully diverse society, it is my belief that competition should determine who is best for a job, not government bullying. Racist companies that only hire whites without regard to competency cannot thrive in such an atmosphere.
