It's an old parlor trick that fakirs "faqir" have done for centuries. Coal ash is supposed to help protect the feet, but do that on a metal plate of the same temperature and you'll definitely lose your soles.
Somehow that's supposed to make you brave enough to ask the boss for a raise. I was surprised that he actually found a way to cash in on it.
