You practice much in a crowded theater with goggles on? Just asking?

How about a blind fold?

Theatre? No. Practive using live fire while wearing a promask with three other team members in a single smoke filled room shooting at targets, yes. Blindfold, yes.

Anything else I can help you with?

This is a tragedy from a sick mf. I know details will emerge and I have heard his mother was not surprised. I don't think you can prevent those things but I also don't think all of the knee jerk increases in screening to come are necessary. We will see how this plays out and our sympathies are with all of the slain and wounded and their entire families.

Haven't read the rest of the posts, but saw a report that he came in the front door ... left out the exit and then returned thru the exit .... he could do that alone.

Yes.

Were you in extreme lowlight with 150 + moving "targets" silhouetted with open exit doors?

Just giving you another opportunity to fluff up with your "expertise" ....

.... and extensive military training. Don't hesitate to jump in there and take it.

But that is not what this thread is about, now is it?

Economics of the movie theater business will drive some at least superficial appearances of increased security, and there will be some scapegoats on this one, since it appears from late reports that he was able to leave and return through an "exit" door, which I took to mean outside of the theater and not the customary exit into the lobby. Complacency may be the key and reduced work force as well. If "mom" wasn't surprised that would be worth a look, if she said it at all.

This made me chuckle quite a bit.

Just saw a report that police found his vehicle parked behind the theater with weapons in it. It is sounding like he gained access with a ticket in street clothes, went out the exit and "fixed it" for re-entry, and then returned in his gear and loaded up.

Some of the survivors are saying they saw him and thought he was part of the opening celebration at first ... so no one apparently initially questioned his extreme appearances.

Some inconvenient hightened security might be in order for the coming months at any locations where significant crowds gather in an attempt to frustrate, if not stop, copy-cats.

Did he enter the theater with the flak jacket and all that gear on, or just come in with street clothes on and put all that gear on when he went out the exit to his car?

I just don't see how increased security could have thwarted his plan, unless it consisted of constantly patrolling the exits, like drive-bys no more than 5 minutes apart.

If he didn't have all that gear on when he entered the theater, it would take at least 5 minutes to put it on, get his weapons, and go back into the theater.

I was only relating what was reported a police contact had stated, but it seems he came in through the ticketing area .... I assume he would not have been allowed in with visible weapons and combat ready dress ..... and went out through the external exit and then returned.

As a minimal precaution in any business with crowds ....

#1: alarmed external exits ... that sound and flash lights in a control area
#2: cam system in the external perimeters of the structure ....
#3. motion activated external light systems.

Minimal technological cost and marginal labor costs. Certainly worth 70 lives.

I mean ... with almost daily reports of car bombs around the world ... why wouldn't a vehicle parked behind the theater draw some attention ... unless it is a frequent event to have vehicles parked "in the back" ... so .. #4 .. no parking zone in the back! duh!

I haven't seen the actual physical layout of that theater, or the mall it was part of. If that truly was an emergency exit, and only led to a non-parking area, such as an alleyway used for trash trucks and deliveries only, I agree with you. The use of that door should have been better controlled.

I have been in stores where you had to pull a lever, which activated the fire alarms, in order to exit thru the emergency doors. Funny I've watched hours and hours of CNN News and other stations discussing this tragedy, but none of the reporters have asked any critical questions about the door he used to pull this off.

One of the moviegoers they interviewed said someone's cell phone went off, and they went to stand in the door to get away from the movie noise and take the call. Sounds like the theater was totally lax about the use of that door.

I seriously doubt he entered the theater in full protective gear, but for that movie, some might just consider it a costume, and compliment him.

It seems that now the focus is on the tragedy and the victims, the Monday-morning quarterbacking will begin within a couple of days ..... then the anti-2nd amendment drums will begin to roll ..... and ..... the anti-violent movie crowd will start yelping ..... and the "summer blockbusters" will struggle to make payroll ....

.... the 2012 Presidential campaign was dragging along anyway..... this will distract some.

I believe the white vehicle to the right of the small enclosed area with doors and truck lid open is his .... not an alley, but "behind" the theater and easily monitored with cams, which ought to be operating anyway to monitor the delivery area.

I'm guessing, of course, but it appears he may have egressed and ingresssed through the door at the top of the stairs inside of the enclosed area ... the door to the enclosed area is open and close to his vehicle.

After zooming into the photo the purple area just behind the dumpster looks like a rear exit that will open up for folks to leave the theater after the movie, AND just below the landing to the upper (2nd?) level at the top of the stairs is a street level door AND it appears that the stairs extend behind the wall of the enclosed area so someone can move in that area behind the wall of the enclosed area and remain in the shadows, if necessary.

My guess is that fire codes prevent those doors from being "securely" closed while the theater is open to the public.

If one did a survey of local theaters they probably follow the same general theme and design, because those theater plans are rubber stamped all over this country by the various companies that own the theaters.

Excellent analysis. I'm guessing that is an overflow parking area and it might have been full when the movie was playing. Wasn't Batman on 4 screens and every one was sold out?

But if the main parking area could handle that many cars, his car would stick out like a sore thumb in that location. If mall security drove by they might consider it suspicious. But wouldn't mall security go home at 9 pm when the stores closed?

He obviously planned this out in minute detail. I'm just worried about what will happen when they finally send a live human being into his apartment. 12 deaths is enough.

#1: Already have.
#2: Robotics.

Over the years our space program has contributed substantially to the inventory of agile mechanisms for special weapons and tactics operations... in fact ... some of the stuff was developed for NASA as prototypes and then "loaned" out to LE.
