They have known it sure, but they have never planned to use it like they are now. What J is saying is that Google has announced that it will actively gather information about where you go, what you look at, what you like, dislike, etc etc etc and then sell this information to advertisers who will then they use this information to target you with specific spam and advertisements gear to where you visited, what you talked about etc. If you not concerned with the invasion into your privacy you should be. If you also do not see this as a precident that could lead down a very slippery slope then you are already one of the lambs.

Default And ......

all the gathered data is subject to subpoena.

Here is a simple test-
google your personal name without signing into any google product;
google your personal name after signing into a google product;

Note the results for each search.

Now
google your hobby name without signing into a google product;
google your hobby name after signing into any google product.

Note the results for each search.
NOTE- when signed into a google product with your real name, DO NOT search for your hobby name and vice versa.

Make sure and sign out of one account and close your browser before signing into your other google account.

Now repeat this once per month for the next few months. Look for any correlation between the ads showing up on the search page and anything you have done on Google previously. I would expect by the 3rd month you will see patterns.

Examples of a couple of bad uses of Google in this world of ours-
- using google calendar to load onto a provider website. you have now exposed all the dates and locations of a provider business.
Results- the provider gets ads for rental cars, airline tickets, hotel discounts etc, etc;
And all this information is subject to subpoena.

- using google gmail to setup dates. you have now given the receiver/sender email addresses and any information contained in the email; dates, times, locations, explicit things discussed, etc.
Results- both parties get ads for all kinds of things related to whatever the bots can match from reading the emails.
And all this information is subject to subpoena.

For those that are comfortable with Google, this discussion is obviously not for you. However, there are a lot of players (hobbiest's and provider's) who are not as Tech savvy as others.

Information is Power!
