Default Market research... Is there protocol for testing the waters in other markets?

Is there any specific protocol for feeling out another market without actually running an ad?

The reason I ask is because I may be away from Dallas for a very short time in the coming week or two, but I am not certain of the precise dates I will be gone. I'm thinking that I might like to Hobby while I'm away, but without knowing the dates I'll be in the other city, an advertisement will be pretty useless and possibly confusing as well.

Is it okay to post something in the other city's co-ed forum to say that I'll be in town in the near future and need help deciding whether or not to Hobby while I'm there?

Of course, once I've nailed down the dates I'll be in the other market I'll post an appropriate ad in the proper forum.

Thanks for the advice and for taking the time to give it.
