Little advice please from our dining aficionados

I've got an old friend coming to town next week, and I'm looking for some dining suggestions that are a little on the upscale side. I'm thinking either Italian, or just a good steak joint. I've heard good things about the Majestic if steak is what we are looking for, but what about Italian restaurants? Other suggestions?

Hi Ms SOTF,I have a couple of suggestions and not all are "upscale", but they are memorable -
 - Fogo de Choa, on the plaza; Brazilizan style and worth every penny.
 - Anthony's on Main or Garozzo's (go to the 5th & Harrison location) for Italian
 - Tasso's, for greek food that is;
 - Golden Ox for steaks
 Happy Eating

I haven't been there lately, but Ruth's Chris was always reliable for a good steak, and their sides were pretty good as well.
As far as Italian, it's not upscale but I've always enjoyed Cascone's.

Le Fou Frog - Market AreaCafe Des Amis - Parkville
Piropos - Northland in Briarcliff area - probably the best
Raphael Restaraunt - Plaza - probably the most romantic

Lots of good suggestions here, and I can't really contribute more on the Italian side. But for upscale classic American food based around local ingredients with varied menus, I like:
 Julian in Brookside
 Michael Smith in Crossroads
 Farmhouse in River Market

DD - I bet we have a lot of friends in common. Do you remember when the cook at Anthony's ran for mayor?

Surprised nobody mentioned Skies. The view is the best in KC. The food was good and the service better than good. That was in October. Had reservations for 7:00 and had to adjust them at the last minute for 8:00 on a weekend. No problems, they took care of it without a hitch.
BTW-I've never been impressed with Ruth's Chris has yet to impress me with their steaks. Service is good though. Just turning into too much of a chain with the food quality IMHO, but I'm pretty picky about my steaks.

If you want Italian then I second Lidia's. Great, great food and stellar service. A little pricey, around $50 a head with drinks plus tip but not at all outrageous. You pay for the service.

Skies has closed. I believe they are turning it into a nightclub.
