Nicki, let me assure you that you would not like that job.
I was ATC at Camp Mabry in the 60's and worked the Austin Tower durning an Aggie game. I experenced a few moments of that guys confusion. That job produces more alchoholics and ulcerated stomachs than any other job. They do not get paid enough they cannot get paid enough to take that stress.
While English is the universal language of ATC world wide some pilots only speek enough to get their ticket and others are dislexic and will turn right when you tell them left and you will hear ATC say "Cessna 14alfa your other left."
The ATC that we hear at JFK was doing a great job but then JFK, Oheara, LAX and Atlanta are the four impossable airports and have the most experenced ATC in the country. DFW is almost that bad.

I have been through O'Hare Airport many times over the years. How they keep all that straight is a freakin' miracle!

Lots more of those on LiveATC.net. Great site and you hear all the behind the scenes stuff that happens at the pointy end of the plane... like this past weekend when a JetBlue flight stranded their passengers for 7 hours.

Being one that used to sit at the pointy end of the plane (small one) I can tell you the ATC guys (ground control) can get pretty testy when pilots don't listen to them. The ground control guys seem to be the worst. When you're a newbie pilot they don't have any patience and will chew you out when you ask them to repeat directions. When ATC takes over after you've cleared the airport they are quite a bit more relaxed. Obviusly so since there usually is quite a bit more distance between the aircraft. Taxiing, take off and landing are the most stressful for these guys. Take off you sometimes have only a 30 second window and do a rolling take off to get out of the way of a massive jet rolling in at 200 mph on your ass! It's a great hobby as well but much more expensive than this hobby.

Back in the DOS days, yep way back then, there was a PC game that simulated such a job. You were basically working an ATC console and directing planes into and out of the area. It was quite good for its day and really gave you a good taste of just what controllers have to deal with.

Here is another video of what controllers do. I think this might be the most complete and accurate one out there.
