In reality, it was a settlement over $400 million Iran paid the U.S. in the 1970s for military equipment it never received, plus negotiated interest after 35 years of arbitration at the Iran–U.S. Claims Tribunal. Of course governments don’t normally move $400 million in physical cash. They also don’t normally operate under sanctions that block electronic transfers. That’s kind of the point.

It looks dramatic because ‘pallets of cash’ is a great headline. But the method of delivery doesn’t magically turn a decades-old legal settlement of pre-1979 funds into a secret bribe. Optics aren’t evidence.

If there were proof it was illegal, there’d be charges — not just adjectives like ‘sketchy.

I think you’re inferring a lot from the delivery method.

Iran was under heavy banking sanctions at the time, which limited how funds could move through normal electronic channels. That’s why the settlement was paid in foreign currency cash instead of a standard U.S. bank transfer. You can definitely argue that it looked bad or sent the wrong message — that’s fair.

But jumping from ‘they wanted cash’ to ‘this was obviously to fund Hezbollah and Hamas’ assumes intent that hasn’t been demonstrated. If there were direct evidence that this specific settlement payment was routed to terrorist groups, that would be a documented intelligence finding, not just something we’re piecing together from optics.
