Ah yes, don't judge someone by their lack of a degree. Some of the smartest people never stepped foot on a campus. Judge them instead on being a bartender or living in a basement. Everyone knows smart people are never bartenders and never live in basements. It violates the natural order.
Brilliant logic!

Care to provide any sources to refute this or does it make you feel better when you talk shit about AOC by bad mouthing college grads like her? I'm not saying you should believe she is a genius because she is a college grad because few are. What I am saying is that you sound foolish by dismissing her and college grads because of your own academic shortcomings.
|
Hey Luke, how do you know Jacuzzme doesn't have a college degree? Did it not occur to you that he could be questioning its value because it didn't pay off for him as handsomely as he was led to believe? I'm pretty sure he doesn't have any "intellectual inferiority complex" lol. No more than people who constantly boast about their academic degrees.
Your earnings analysis is a good start, but it's incomplete. You left out a couple of things: 1) Most college grads begin their careers with significant student debt, while non-college grads carry no such burden. 2) This means non-grads can start saving & investing their earnings sooner, since debt repayment isn't siphoning off most of their disposable income.
Since you claim to work in the investment/finance industry, you should appreciate the time value of money. Non-college grads get a head start in accumulating wealth earlier. When you retire, dollars invested earlier are worth a lot more than dollars invested later.
As for AOC, she may have earned a bachelor's degree in international relations, but it didn't show in her responses to the foreign policy questions she fielded in Munich. She would have sounded more intelligent if she had worked for a few years at some foreign policy think tank, instead of bartending. Then she would have thought about and written about the issues, and her answers might have sounded more coherent.
I doubt if she even reads publications like the Economist or Foreign Affairs magazine. Or bothers to watch Fareed Zakaria's "Global Public Square" on Sundays. Or has anyone on her staff doing those things and briefing her on her talking points.

You figure there’s tons of geniuses pouring drinks? I find that highly unlikely, it’s the kind of job one has when they have no actual skills.
And for the record, Jacuzzme graduated high school and spent 22 years in the army, retired and started a business. Aviation field, with draconian rates typically north of 1k an hour. On the other hand, if my quick calculation is correct, I’ve paid 60 semesters of college tuition for others. Gotta be over a million invested, but all for fields that actually benefit from the education. Mrs J and baby Js were more than welcome to be a psych, communication, liberal arts major if they wanted, but don’t send me the bill. My hard work isn’t paying for your retarded degree that’ll get you no return on investment. Medical, law, stem, no problem. Those are degrees worth having.
The defense of the blithering idiot AOC in this thread is entertaining. It’s like people never listened to her speak for more than 30 seconds, which is about all it takes to determine she’s about as retarded as they come.

Ocasio-Cortez Offers a Working-Class Vision in Munich, With Some Stumbles
Speaking at Europe’s largest security conference, she tied income inequality to the rise of authoritarians and offered a forceful rebuttal to President Trump’s worldview. She also had some shaky moments.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, a progressive who made a name for herself focused on economic problems at home in America, might have seemed an odd fit for the Munich Security Conference, an annual gathering of foreign leaders and diplomats focused on international security.
But at two Friday panels, she tied worsening income inequality to the rise of authoritarianism, weaving her working-class worldview into a broader message about combating far-right populism and strengthening relationships with Western allies. Everyday people, she argued, were turning away from democracy because wealthy elites had failed to address their needs.
“Extreme levels of income inequality lead to social instability,” she said, adding that it was an “urgent priority that we get our economic houses in order and deliver material gains for the working class, or else we will fall to a more isolated world governed by authoritarians that also do not deliver to working people.”

Things changed for Ocasio-Cortez when her 48-year-old father died of cancer in the middle of the 2008 recession. She started working two jobs — one as a bartender — sometimes working 18-hour shifts to help her family make ends meet.
According to her website, after experiencing financial and healthcare struggles firsthand, Ocasio-Cortez realized how deeply policy decisions made at the highest levels of government impact everyday families living paycheck to paycheck.

oh my! daddy dies and leaves poor AOC and family destitute! her dad was an architect and partner in a small architecture firm. making enough to live in toney Westchester County. if her dad didn't provide for their future in case he died then tough titties.
her "poor girl from the Bronx" story is bullshit.

Exactly!
Hmmm... after giving it further thought, maybe AOC could have tried to tie everything together by saying Chi-Com President Xi would be justified in seizing (democratic) Taiwan because average per capita income on the island is 2-1/2 times greater than on the Mainland!
Gotta wipe out that income inequality!
Then after digesting Taiwan, it'll be time for the Chi-Coms to move on and invade Singapore, where per capita income is almost 7 times greater than on the Mainland! And AOC will be cheering them on!

How is that different than some districts in Texas or Florida where 85% vote republican? She was still elected to congress multiple times. She is still smarter than a number of her deep red republican colleagues in congress.

She lived in a small two bedroom home a few miles from the Bronx where she was born. Her family moved there to give their children access to better public schools. Her mother cleaned toilets for a living and her father ran a small business. That’s not exactly rich now is it. And if her father was the primary breadwinner then you can see how she would have had to work two jobs to provide for her family.
By the way your obvious empathy is just underwhelming.

Income inequality is a real danger to democratic societies.
https://news.uchicago.edu/story/econ...on-study-finds
Economic inequality leads to democratic erosion, study finds
UChicago scholar sheds light on why elected officials threaten democracy more often than military coups in the 21st century
Political commentators, academics and others have been wringing their hands over threats to democracy in recent years. A new study helps us better understand one of the possible driving forces behind the erosion of democratic norms and institutions: economic inequality.
Published in PNAS, this large cross-national statistical study shows economic inequality is one of the strongest predictors of where and when democracy erodes—even wealthy and longstanding democracies are vulnerable if they are highly unequal.
The researchers noticed the leaders who were coming into office and then eroding their democracies relied on grievance, frustration or nihilism among the populace regarding “elite” institutions. Their goal, then, was to understand whether unequal economic conditions are the backdrop to political polarization, along with grievance and skepticism about institutions.

No, not kidding. A strong middle class is a requirement for a robust democratic society. If we don’t fix our own income inequality here in the united states we risk further damage to our own economy and democratic institutions. Rich people getting richer and poor people getting poorer will lead us towards oligarchy.
A billionaire president and the billionaires surrounding him are evidence that we’re already there.

She grew up in Westchester. Poor people, even middle class for that matter, don’t live in one of the most affluent zip codes in the world. You suck that commie propaganda in like a Hoover upright. She a play actor, recruited for being cute, Hispanic, having a college degree, and will never go off script because she’s too fucking stupid to have an original thought.

yep!
The family lived in an apartment in Parkchester [14] until Ocasio-Cortez was five, when they moved to a house in suburban Yorktown Heights.
Yorktown Heights is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Yorktown in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 1,781 at the 2010 census. [4]
Yorktown Heights is in the town of Yorktown, in northern Westchester County, 45 miles from New York City, with 40 square miles of rolling hills, farmland, residential areas and light industry, including the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center.
AOC was a sophomore in college when her dad died. here is the house they had
small but not section 8 housing yeah? about the size of my first house in 1996

Plenty of lower income people live in areas where rich people live. They do so because they work there and they want access to the same public infrastructure that rich people have.
“Ms. Ocasio-Cortez's mother was born in Puerto Rico. Her late father, Sergio Ocasio, an architect, was born in the Bronx. The family lived in Parkchester, a planned community of mid-rise buildings, in the same apartment where Ms. Ocasio-Cortez now lives, until Alexandria was about 5, when they moved an hour north to a modest two-bedroom house on a quiet street in Yorktown Heights, a suburb in Westchester County, in search of better schools.”
Here is a link to a photo of the actual house she lived in. Take a look.

If I am “sucking that commie propaganda in like a Hoover upright” then you are apparently falling for the conservative republican propaganda being pushed out by the right wing media outlets attacking AOC over bullshit like her upbringing.
