Default Some pain may be coming to rural area grocery stores

https://www.politico.com/news/2025/0...abill-00463048

I noted the Greensburg area Shop 'N Save was specifically mentioned and the owner was interviewed.

There needs to be more of a response than to tell then to just live within their means and adapt. Something with more empathy and understanding will be needed if independent grocery stores start closing or we see them having to hard pivot when their margins are already so damn low.

Let 'em get what they voted for. I find it interesting (and hilarious) that any time you tell a MAGA that you hope they get what they voted for, they get mad.

We all have to learn to live within our means. Adapt and thrive, thats how the world works.....the sooner the people learn that the better. If you feel bad for them, get out there and give them some of your hard earned cash directly ,no one is stopping you.

That's a very Christian answer. Maybe if enough of us get together and give up one hooker meet up a month we can help feed some folks

i thought the supposed cut in the food stamp program was basically having able bodied people with no kids get out and work. that doesnt include the disabled or eldery or people with children at home

am i wrong? if not whats wrong with that? welfare isnt a right and if a person can work, they should. it was okay when bill clinton signed it into law

Unintended consequences and ripple effects sometimes hurt those you want to help in ways you didn't expect.

I say its cheap to live on beans and rice, and, instead of money, how about food aid in the form of food, canned goods, cornmeal, flour, etc, it eliminates the trade of food stamps for money, and won't have a great resale value on the street, and perhaps, the obese, may lose some weight as a benefit.

The side benefit, is that they have to work, even if its preparing food for themselves, perhaps, once they learn that skill, they could work as a cook.

If you want to say we have universal food for the needy, lets not let them buy Lobster tail, pop, and chips, but food they actually can survive on.

I also find it quite strange you sudden care for the poor rural folk in flyover country, when nobody on the left gives a fuck because they vote Trump 80 percent of the time.

Probably going to hurt big, city based chains too, like GE, oh, if it burns a hole in their pocket too, I'm all for it.

As its going now, you are going to have GE, Aldi, and Walmart, which, is honestly most of the time I shop at those 3, but add in Sams Club and Costco as well.

I do try to shop local, but our nearest Shop and Save is FUCKING ridiculously high priced on everything, pricing themselves out of the market at this point.

You do realize they haven't used "food stamps" in many years

I'm not on the left, so find it as strange as you need to.

I am quite familiar with rural grocery stores, having spent so much time in them. Spent good chunks of time on a farm. Have plenty of friends in rural areas. Know places where you really only have one decent option for groceries unless you're traveling a few dozen miles on state roads.

Picked apples up near Corry at one point in my life.

This is already mostly true. Read up on eligibility requirements for SNAP benefits here. https://www.cbpp.org/research/food-a...y-and-benefits

The changes to SNAP in the OBBBA will have significant consequences for many people in the poor community and the businesses that support them. Mostly by putting the burden on the states instead of the federal government.
