I know two who borrowed money locally, in Cuba, and had to repay around $7,000 or $8,000 after they arrived in the USA. It didn't sound like they were trafficked, but probably the lenders would pressure their relatives back in Cuba if they failed to pay. And the women did feel pressure to pay the loans back quickly. I'm not sure if that was because the interest rate was high or because of something else.
One of them had problems during the first year or so because she didn't have a social security number or permission to work. She worked as a stripper in the USA for a couple of months, then when she had her social security number started working in an amusement park among other places.
She didn't do sex work in Cuba. She flew directly from Cuba to Mexico, and arrived in the USA less than a month after she left home. So anyway, she's a good girl now, as are a lot of Cuban women. There are several very attractive Cubanas working in the Jason's deli around the corner from me. And lots working in a contract baking operation close to my office. Not all young Cuban hotties are strippers and hookers.
The second Cuban who I know very well worked in a hooker bar in Havana, and she flew to Ecuador. That was back when Ecuador was about the only country that would freely give Cubans visas. She worked in a Chongo (hooker bar) in Quito to save money. Then headed north, through the Darien gap and up through Mexico, stopping in Cancun to strip for a while. While she's still a stripper, she is the exception, a genuinely nice person who doesn't take advantage of people any more than your average person. She doesn't do anything worse than alcohol and not a lot of that.
I'm pretty confident the first woman, the good girl, came to the USA on her own. I'd bet Alfred's right about the second one though. She ended up ditching her boyfriend.

I've seen them navigate the immigration process and get boob jobs with help from friends, family, charities, boyfriends and husbands. And money they saved. The ones I know don't have pimps who manage multiple women. They do have freeloading boyfriends and husbands, as well as some who are hardworking Uber drivers.
I disagree with you and Jram1, I don't think the Cubanas at Baby Dolls are being trafficked, at least by my definition. Most of those who borrowed money to travel here already have paid it back, if they were going to.
