Default Libraries get a temporary reprieve

Who thinks there should be less money for local libraries?

Someone who's trying to destroy the country from within at the behest of his foreign dictator overlord.

Someone who doesn’t want the public to think on their own.

That too. Unfortunately, that part's nothing new, though. George Carlin has a great bit about that on "Life Is Worth Losing" from 2006.

What is new is having a U.S. "president" who is a wholly compromised Russian asset taking direct orders from the Kremlin.

Who the fuck still uses a library when you can find everything online?

It's not helping inner city yutes, based on graduation percentages.

Us rural folks aren't privileged to get them, so, this is purely a city/suburb issue.

You want libraries, YOU PAY FOR THEM.

I use the library at minimum weekly if not more often. I also pay plenty in taxes for the services I receive. The truth is that the state takes more of my money in taxes and sends it to those rural communities that you seem to think are being cheated in some way.

But you go ahead and celebrate the defunding of libraries and the corporation for public broadcasting. The truth is that the first libraries and public radio stations that will go under are those that are in the most rural communities.

EDIT: Now that I’ve thought about it some more defunding medicare and medicaid will cause healthcare to close in rural communities as well.

Lots of people use libraries every day. What kind of question is that?

Also, funny how it's the "dO yOuR oWn rEsEaRcH" crowd who want to do away with libraries.

Pretty telling.

Additionally, I pay way more in taxes than a certain U.S. "president" ever has.

NPR?

Sure, I want to hear about trans dinosaurs.

And, that's not funny, it was the topic the last time I listened.

OR- We could defund everything. No road works, no libraries, no healthcare, no internet- I mean if you don't work, or have a car, or have any health needs, you don't need WebMD.

You know who that would end up killing more of- folks in red states- as they are predominately where the poor live, and get more subsidies and enjoy the services of all the same mentioned. Hell- diabetes will take over most of the folks in the southern Merica- I'd imagine you all would be good with no mail either, to go with no dept of education.

What could go wrong??

It's amazing to me that folks here who think about the items they personally don't use, are a waste of money and need to be DOGE'd.

a quick search reveals:

While there isn't a single national percentage for library funding, public libraries primarily rely on local government funding, with a significant portion coming from property taxes. The American Library Association estimates that roughly 85% of public library funding comes from local sources. State and federal funding, while present, typically make up a smaller percentage.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Local Funding:
.
Approximately 63% of libraries surveyed indicated they rely on local government appropriations. This often comes from property taxes.
State Funding:
.
Around 32% of libraries reported receiving funding from state sources. This can be through direct appropriations or grants.
Federal Funding:

The federal government provides a smaller proportion of library revenue, typically 1% or less. A major source of federal funding is the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)

Defunding everything is what's going to happen if the swamp doesn't get drained.

Are you blind, don't you see this country failing if it can't pay the bills?

I can.

Then why spend an extra trillion on the military instead of a half trillion?

We can walk and chew gum in terms of prioritization. Btw, Trump's gonna spend even more and take in even less. So.. maybe let's not nickel and dime the library

The world is facing WW3 on a daily basis.

Four years of cuts, DEI bullshit, Covid firings, making trannies front line, all hurt the military.

It of all things should not be weakened further.

Libertarian doctrine states a small but effective government, that fights wars abroad, strong defense of the country and CRITICAL infrastructure, roads, bridges, power, energy, etc.

Libraries are nice, but not critical.

Needs and wants, learn the difference.
