I have a more basic question: why hasn’t the government developed their own encrypted messaging app for use on government-issued devices that we know these top-level officials are given? And if the answer is, “they have”, why weren’t these people using said app on said devices? It would be kinda hard then for an unauthorized person to slip into that conversation.

EDIT: I may have just answered my own question. A new DoD deputy director apparently got a waiver to install Signal on government devices. One possible reason? You can erase messages on that platform.

good question. i mean, Microsoft skype is no better yeah? so why don't we have some proprietary app for this? we have plenty of military grade communications gear so why not for this too? no one in combat would be using signal to begin with.

part of the issue is this app is what the DoD has used before Trump. so it's what they had to work with. and the security of the app and anything can be hacked can be an issue however there was no hack it was some staffer under Waltz Alex Wong who apparently accidentally included the The Atlantic editor in the chat.

there is one thing that can be done right now and that is issue phones to the staff and not have them use their personal phones for work. and anyone in the address book has to be official contacts only.

Are we sure about that? It sounds like a new appointee had to get a waiver approved to install it.

I’m hoping we see some more reporting about this particular part of the story, since it would seem the most technologically advanced country in the world would not have to rely on an open-source app managed by a non-profit as their primary offsite means of communication among top government officials.

Unless the technology recommended by the government had some strings attached, like an audit trail, that a lot of folks wouldn’t feel comfortable with.

yes.

Biden-era guidance encouraged use of Signal app by highly-targeted govt officials: 'Best practice'

'Adopt a free messaging application for secure communications that guarantees end-to-end encryption, such as Signal or similar apps,' 2024 CISA guidance reads

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/bid...-best-practice

and in this case the chat was not compromised it was a staffer working for Waltz who accidentally invited the editor at The Atlantic.

here's what's in store for that staffer in the near future ...

... Let's give things a few more days and see what
they decide to do, mate. ... No doubt situations of this
sort have happened before - they just didn't hit the
news media... This one did because Mr. Goldberg wanted
to pitch a false narrative - "war secrets" and what-not.

And I would agree that there prolly IS some-sort of
audit trail in the communications technology.
So this aint the first "communications leak" and
it won't be the last.

That was brought up on something I was listening to. Difference was, those who used the server knew that it was not official server and they regulated themselves on what they put there.

I'm sure they do. But donny went out of his way to ignore it and use his unsecured device. Did it first time around and i'd bet still does.

Wrong.

This was a fuckup of massive proportion. No matter how hard the MAGA cult tries to spin this otherwise, there’s no getting around it.

The pendejo’s dumber than a bag of hammers and has surrounded himself with people dumber than him. As evidenced by their behaviour in the aftermath of this revelation.

Giggle and call it WINNING if you like, but you’re only fooling yourself.

the app was not hacked. the app can encrypt data end to end. the app was never the issue. some staffer invited a contact he shouldn't have invited.

it's a nothing-burger.

there was no classified data in the chat. even The Atlantic's own post of the log shows that.

you do know that the mission itself was a success yes? would you have preferred it failed so you can claim Trump fucked up?

I guess I’m a bit surprised our government, with its vast resources, hasn’t developed such an app for encrypted messaging on government devices. I suppose they don’t believe such an expenditure is worthwhile since the only truly secure means of communication is face to face in a lead-enclosed room.

As others have said, the coming days will hopefully reveal if there was a better solution available to them that they rejected for some reason.

1. Out of 150,000 emails only two sentences were MARKED Classified at the time the email was sent. You will not go to jail or lose your access for that.

2. The other emails that contained classified information, those emails were NOT marked classified at the time the emails were sent. This was confirmed by Comey.

3. What Waltz and Hegseth did was 1000 times worse that what HRC did with her server that she got from husband "Slick Willie Clinton"

4. Even Trump said that Waltz should not use the Signal App anymore.

Trump claimed he didn’t know what Signal was. Of course.

Getting back to the original question....
Was he ever off alcohol??

Regardless, doing sideline reporter commentary on this is not appropriate regardless of what "system" is used, even if "secured". This falls under the never ever discuss anything military, period.
I note that navy spouses, etc, never know where their spouse's ship is, except when in port.

Truth!

And had any of these bozos had a whit of experience or a scintilla of qualifications in the arena entrusted to them, they'd have known better.
