I love dinner dates! I think it gives both parties the chance to develop a rapport which can only lead to a better connection.
Meeting someone for the first time in such an intimate setting can be very nerve-racking. I think social time helps alleviate that and just creates for a better experience all around.

And with a long term friend, it can reinforce the agreement.

In the before times, I have been known to take ladies to lunch/dinner on occasion. Usually it's somebody I already have met before, but not always. It has always been a social outing between two regular people, not a professional one. Besides buying the meal, which a gentleman does, I have never paid anything for a social outing. I've also been known to fix doors & windows and help paint apartments and I have never charged anyone for that.
Not everything is a monetary transaction. Sometimes it's just a favor or being nice. YMMV

But, can’t that also “backfire” for ladies, Ginger? Some of us old, ugly fellas are best kept BCD. For a first date, you may just want to get us out of the public eye together, do our thing, and send us on our way...
I can, though, see lunch/dinner dates happening after the initial meet. One of my ATFs was always awesome breakfast/brunch/lunch company.

I’ve never had a dinner date backfire… And I go on them frequently. A lot of my friends are older gentleman.
