Lib Dems do love their authority - and imposing closure of the economy and forcing people to stay at home or go to jail - suits the Dem governors just fine and dandy .

They imposed the restrictions - and "Only They" can lift the restrictions.

In other words - Lib Dems decide "When it is Over" - and people must obey.


People are fed up with the horror imposed - and are ready to take chances with Wuhan virus - shelter those at risk, and get on with life and the economy,
Terror strikes the lib Dems cold, flinty tiny grinch hearts.


Bottom line - the Wuhan virus is "out of the box' - contact tracing is ineffective with 20 million - or more - infections.

The virus will work its' way through the populations until herd immunity is reached - we should shelter those who are at high risk - and let people choose as they wish to resume life, liberty, employment, and creating an economy of other than LibDem welfare handouts.

The governor of Texas is republican. He tried to open things back up only to have to shut them down again due to a spike in the number of cases.

If you could reach Herd Immunity with just 400,000 deaths, then one could make the argument that would be the way to go. However, the data suggest that it will be well over a 1 million deaths to reach Herd Immunity. Ionnavidis calculation was off by good amount.

The 2nd wave wasn't Abbott's fault. He took the correct action...starting business up.

Unfortunately spoiled brats have no self-control. If the business owners and customers cannot exercise some common sense and healthy judgment calls that's not the Governor's fault .... just like the state issuing a driver's license doesn't make the state at fault for all of the deaths on the highway and nonlethal accidents.

I don't think Abbott's the bad guy here. He's more like Newsom than say Trump, who appears to be pretending like this doesn't exist, or Cuomo who made a demonstrably bad decision sending Covid patients to nursing homes. Abbott didn't shut government down a second time, he just closed down bars and reduced restaurant occupancy to 50% of capacity from 75%, both of which make a lot of sense.

He did make some good decisions, like the quarantine on travelers from New York. And he's doing his best with the bully pulpit to get people to socially distance and wear masks.

Hindsight is always best, and yes it would have been great if he'd started a universal masking order early on and pumped lots of resources into contact tracing. We'd be far ahead of the game. But that's more than what any of the governors did.

The main thing I fault him for is prohibiting localities from fining people for wearing masks back around the end of April. We lost precious time, over a month, while the mayors figured out they could accomplish the same objective by fining businesses instead.

Well, government doesn't have to enable the dumb asses. I'm a dumb ass. I'd probably drink a cold beer while driving, drive without my seat belt, or even drive short distances on rare occasions with a blood alcohol level greater than .08%. I wouldn't get drunk enough to test 0.11% or 0.12% and then drive though, I'm not a complete dumb ass.

Anyway I don't do any of the above because there are laws against it and I'm damn glad I don't.

I wish my dumb ass friends in their 60's and 70's would wear masks to the supermarket and stay 6 feet away from strangers in restaurants. And they will if a law requires them to do so.

This graph is for the USA? If so, mostly what you're seeing is the effect of deaths decreasing in the northeast. In Texas the death rate has been pretty flat, see this graph,

There is something to what you're getting at though, hopefully improvements in medical treatment of this disease and the fact that fewer older people seem to be getting it will improve the infection fatality rate. Also, yes, if you test more people you have more positives, which will be reflected in the case count but not the death count.

Actually, this graph, from the CDC, doesn't make sense. Deaths reported in the USA the last couple of weeks have been running between 300 and 750 per day. This graph shows them going to 83 for the entire week ended 6/20/2020. Most likely it's because of the delay between when a person dies and when the death record is passed onto the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and incorporated into the CDC graph. In other words, recent weeks don't reflect all the deaths -- the numbers will increase as more death records are submitted. I read elsewhere on the CDC web site that only 60% of death records are submitted to NCHS within 10 days of the date of death.

That's not to say that the death rate in the USA has not declined a lot since April -- it has. See

What "law requires them to do so"?

The generally accepted principles involving creating "a law" (which has a constitutional foundation) have not been suspended because of a virus .... and hopefully you agree that they have not been.
