Absolutely this. It is kind of like picking up someone else's guitar. You can't just belt out a virtuoso, you need to spend some time getting a feel and tuning to perfection.

I get a lot of compliments on my technique, half of which I actually believe. But I spend the first couple of minutes figuring out what works and what doesn't.
