Mitch. If you want really fresh Granny Smith apples this time of year in SA I suggest you go online and search for orchards in Pennsylvania that ship. The Granny Smith ripens in Pa. in October. Those grown around Medina in the Love Creek Orchard ripen in July-August and they use most of theirs for goods sold in their store in Medina. Nearly all of those sold in local supermarkets are picked early, waxed to preserve, then shipped. Not fresh when you buy them. I have a daughter in Maryland who picks Granny Smiths at an orchard in Lancaster County Pa. and ships me a case via UPS. Makes the best apple pies, tarts, cobblers. Good luck.
