It hurts but it's not unbearable and it's so worth it. I started going a little over a year ago and I'm never going back to shaving. The most painful appt will be your first one and it gets better after that. My hair grows in so sparsely now that even after I haven't been waxed it comes in very thin, nothing like when I was shaving. I go in every three weeks to get waxed and it doesn't take more than 30 minutes. It's important to see someone who knows what they're doing. I've been to a a half a dozen people and not all waxes are created equally. It's worth splurging to get the best.
