Have no references. Asking for proof.

First, if this is not the right forum to ask please let me know.

I'm new to this. I'm just looking for a fun time. Recently, I was asked for references (standard practice) and I told the other party I had none. I ask them if they were newbie friendly. I was told they required something that proves I'm not a pig. I work freelance and my work is contract. I don't have anything that ties me to a company. Any suggestions/ideas for proof?
