If U want 2 try the 100% synthetic route it has been my experience that synthetics will do a terrific job of cleaning the petroleum oil gunk residue off your piston's rings allowing them to seat against the cylinder walls awhile lot better and therefore reduce and in some instances nearly eliminate oil consumption. Plus I've even known it 2 reduce lifter chatter. BUT U will have 2 have a mechanic replace the cover gaskets. All-in-all a whole lot less expensive than complete engine replacement!!!

I am not trying to be confrontational just puzzled and this is probably super naive but I don't get all these problems I read on the forums with things like run down cars. The average provider probably makes enough money in 2 hours to make a monthly payment on a nice new car. Just consider it a business investment got to be better than the time, hassle and expense of repeatedly dealing with an unreliable vehicle. Just a question I have pondered for a while

This might come as a surprise to you but auto dealerships can get just about anyone financed. It's all about how much do you to put down and what interest rate are you willing to pay.

Questions for you. I am going to assume your check engine light is on...?

Are the only symptoms of the problem(s) the leaky gasket, knocking and using oil?

If so, you may be able to drive the car another 100000 miles with those issues as long as you watch the oil, and switch to a synthetic. I would also use as heavy a grade of synthetic as the manual will allow.

If the check engine light is on...go to Auto Zone or Oreilly's and have them put a code reader on it (free service). Write down the codes and then check them out on the internet.

You may find that by switching oil, and trading someone here on the board your time for their time fixing your gasket you actually have to spend very little and have a serviceable car for a long time to come.

I've been a mechanic for as long as i can remember so I could give you an honest evaluation. I was going to say MW could vouch for me but I'm not sure if that would be a positive or a negative towards me. I'd peek at your car if you let me peek at your chassis! But if it gets serious, and you really want me to get into it, I can do that. But if you want me to go deep into it, I won't want to stop until we are done. Hell, let's dive in!
