Coots believed that he wouldn't be harmed because of faith ....the other cases that you mentioned had nothing to do with religion, they were just accidents ...neither one thought that their actions made them impervious to death because of faith.

Actually it only prohibits Congress from passing any law establishing a religion. As a result the individual states by virtue of the 10th Amendment are left with that ability. In fact the President could establish a religion if he so chose but would not have any real meaning since there is no enforcement measure.
