Default american courtesan documentary

just came across this documentary which features Skylar Cruz amongst others (some NOLA scenes and people). wondering if any of y'all have seen it and what your thoughts were? for me, I found it interesting, maybe a little too much crying, etc. but overall a good and mostly positive portrayal of the escort biz.

most interesting thing to me was how the newer girls had generally much more positive experiences/introduction to the biz than the older women. I think this is probably attributable to the rise of the internet (increased connectivity, lessening the need for pimp-types) but the documentary didn't really touch on that. I just noticed it was mostly the older women that were telling horror stories

its worth a look at, and is available on itunes for around 5-6 bucks for a 24hr rental, so not a bad way to pass the time during this shitty weather

Haven't seen it yet, but I agree with you about the internet lessening the need for "managers" and putting more control in the hands of the providers lessening the cases of abuse. Also, the increasing social acceptance of casual sex is probably a factor in why the younger girls are happier with their involvement in the hobby.

I think with any job over time you will have more negative stories than the positive. I havent been in the game too many years and other than a few jerks its mostly been positive. I know of a well known escort that says she has been doing it way before she was legal, and she is probably mid 30's now. Very fucked in the head, she admits to being bi-polar off meds, and has a hatred for all men. Im going to guess at first she probably enjoyed it, but over time became what she is. I want to say from the last communication with her she definitely has multiple personalities, and believes her own lies. It is very sad.

Some can handle it, some cant. You have to be able to compartmentalize, and keep your true self separate than the persona. Once the two become the same that is when a person is "lost."

one of the things the documentary touched on, and which I have often thought as well, is if it wasn't illegal, and didn't have the social stigma, then a lot of the mental problems and abuse problems would disappear. if it wasn't deemed 'bad' by society, then you wouldn't feel the need to compartmentalize it. would be interesting to see a comparison of escort experiences between the US and other countries.

Very True, I know of another person who makes very judgemental posts on facebook, and her views are that of someone who is a sunday school teacher, yet this is how she makes a living. I never want to live in her head, how conflicted. She has said before I am the only person she can talk too, but at times I just hit the ignore button. She also has been in it since about 18, comes from a good family, but has the problem within.

My mom knows what I have going on, and for the most part I dont care who knows, nobody else pays my bills. I think if you only see those whom you are attracted too and who do not degrade you then it makes it easier. I notice those who do whatever and whomever because they have to tend to have the most issues. You gotta have a plan B!

And if I were younger with a smoking hot body, single no children, etc. I would be a porn star lol, and never feel guilt about it.

As you said, its society who judges us

Interesting you should bring this up. NOLA Defender just published an interview with Kristin DiAngelo, who created the doc. Here's the link:
