I'm getting the same thing. I think that the site gets advertising money every time one of the pop-ups opens. The number of pop-ups increases if you are not logged in. At least that is my experience.

Default The Story On the Pop Up Ads

The pop up ads were started by the owners to allow companies who supported this site from the beginning to advertise. The pop up window, like the banners and tabs and text links, is an advertising campaign.

They agree with the folks that feel pop ups can be annoying, so controls were put in place to minimize the annoyance to the members.

If you're not logged in, and browsing as a guest, you will get the pop up when you visit ECCIE and then click on a forum. Simply close it and it will not come up again for 24 hours.

If you are logged in to your account, you might get the pop up when you first log in, but after that you should not see it anymore.

The problem exists with those who have programs that block cookies or clear cookies when they close their browser or periodically while they are browsing. Those people may repeatedly get the pop up because it recognizes that there is no cookie and displays the pop up.

The majority of people who stay logged into the site should not have a major problem with the pop up ads.

So, there you have it.

I do not agree with this idea. But I did not invent this place.

I myself have not experienced the pop up ads until recently. So far, when they appear is when I first go to the site. After I log in I never encounter one again until I log off and access the site again to log on.

For those of you who wish to make your opinion known about this idea, please go to the National forums and post those opinions in the threads that are about this topic.

Thank you for the explanation. Since I use the incognito mode in my browser it deletes the cookies so I get them each time. Now I understand why.

Not that it matters much to anyone, but I don't have a high opinion of pop-ups and never make use of their offers, or the companies that are behind them.

It may interest the owners of the site that online advertising: especially pop-ups and banners, are fairly ineffective. There are several articles online to this effect.

They're freaking annoying! And the answer is to keep your browser open so that your cookies remain fresh?

It's getting to be like Jerry World or Nascar where it's more about the sponsors and squeezing out every last freaking penny than it is about the contributing members.

At least give us the option to turn the annoying mother fuckers off. I personally will NEVER use that service for the simple reason that they're being forced upon me.

You all are preaching to the choir.

Please read the last sentence in my post. It suggests the only option I know of to focus your frustration in the right direction.

I get the pop-up when I click to log-in. If I was going to a forum first without logging in, I would understand...the pop-up is intended for unregistered viewers. But it is a true pain when I click to log on and start typing, only to find that I am wasting my time until I close the pop-up.
