President Trump has told President Chi as politely as he could that he personally needs to intervene. I doubt he will, or for that even could.

We all knew this day was coming. The idea of a autonomous Hong Kong would soon morph into an independence movement.

I don’t have a clue what the Communist Regime is going to do.

Hong Kong protesters destroyed 'smart' lampposts because they fear China is spying on them

  • Protesters in Hong Kong targeted the city's "smart lampposts" during weekend protests over fears that they were being used to spy on them.
  • The lampposts, which were installed in July, feature WiFi networks, cameras to monitor traffic, and sensors to track air quality. The Hong Kong government has said that the lampposts do not have facial recognition technology.
Pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong capped off a volatile weekend of protests by targeting the city's "smart" lampposts, which they fear the Chinese government is using to spy on them.

The lampposts, the first 50 of which were installed in June, are part of a smart-city initiative and have sensors and CCTV cameras to monitor illegal waste dumping sites and traffic data, including license plate numbers, the South China Morning Post reported in July.

Protesters expressed concern that the lampposts, which are also 5G WiFi hubs, were being used by the Chinese government for surveillance on the ongoing protests.

Hong Kong's government has said that the devices do not have facial recognition technology and no data will be shared with third parties, such as the Beijing government.

However, with public trust in the government at a low as protests continue for the third month, protesters demanded that the lampposts be removed, with some going so far as to vandalize or completely destroy the devices.

The 50 lampposts currently constructed were intended to be the first of 400; however, as the Hong Kong Free Press reported, TickTack Technology Limited, the tech company that provides parts for the lamppost, will cease cooperation with the Hong Kong government after they said their staff members were threatened.

The company stressed that it has no relationship with the mainland government, but protesters were wary that the smart lampposts were connected to the mainland firm Shanghai Sensi, which provided one of the systems for lighting the lampposts.

"We understand that disputes in society over the past few months led the public to be cautious and mistrustful towards some technology," TickTack Technology said in a statement. The company also said it hoped its withdrawal would calm fears and defuse the tension between protesters and the government, the Hong Kong Free Press reported.

China's government is notorious for using technology like facial recognition to spy on its citizens, with the most egregious example being the country's ethnic Uighur population. The Chinese government has created a virtual police state for Uighurs in Xinjiang, using facial recognition and human intelligence to identify Uighurs to send to indoctrination camps and monitor them after they are released.

Sick of The Mystic. He doesn't work and hates the country that gives him shelter and puts food in his belly. He uses an avatar that is of an old man that is now deceased. Yet he tries to shame others for their age, I bet in real life he looks like bin laden. He's on here 24/7 spouting his anti American bs. He professes his love for his prophet Mahommed. I would sure hate to ride an airplane with him.

Xi is for the moment using a light hand on the freedom movement in Hong Kong.

The precedent is Tienanmen square - and the time will come that Xi will roll the tanks and army when the resistance movement to totalitarian control of Hong Kong continues.

Xi will choose a time to declare -"enough Provocation" - and force Hong Kong by military force into the China communist fold.

And the west will not be able to stop him - Hong Kong is geographically China - and to try to stop China and free Hong Kong by opposing military action is a fool's errand. Not militarily possible.

And= all the while the Axis of Socialism will be bleating their approval of China and Xi. Perhaps the Axis of Socialism can move to Beijing and bow to their hero -Xi.

What part of the reality that Hong Kong is part of mainland China are folks not understanding? The smart residents bailed out in the late 90s when the British lease expired.

many did if they could but since they were British subjects not British citizens there was no direct path to go to the UK. many were able to immigrate to the UK and others went elsewhere to places like Canada and Australia. many others could not due to various things like money and those pesky immigration quotas the Democrats want to do away with.

anyone who was in Hong Kong as an actual British citizen most likely booked back to the UK a long time ago. what makes this uprising interesting is that the movement is based on young people who weren't even alive in 1997 and only know of the way Hong Kong was under British control from their parents. of course they do have some direct knowledge because the agreement forced China to allow a "British feel" to Hong Kong for these many years since 1997. that agreement won't end until 2047 then Hong Kong loses any special protections it has under the agreement. this is happening now because China is jumping the gun.

what brought this on is China forcing only approved Communist candidates into Hong Kong elections. these candidates of course follow the Communist mantra of the ruling party. people in Hong Kong saw this for what it was, a matter of control way ahead of the end of the agreement. China would have been smarter not to do this but now the fuse has been lit and they've backed themselves into a corner. they can't reverse course and eventually they will be forced to take over Hong Kong by military force. then the shit really hits the fan and we'll see if this begins unrest in the mainland. if that happens China as a communist controlled nation is done, over. they will collapse and in rather spectacular fashion.

does anyone think that the Chinese military can contain full fledged mass uprisings all across China? i don't. it's a matter of numbers and the people have them not the Army. hundreds of millions against a few million? no-win game for the military. they'll get bogged down in a guerilla style resistance war they can't win and can't sustain. it won't matter that the masses aren't armed like the US. there are plenty of available resources for bombs and that wonderful Russkie invention the Molotov cocktail. watch what happens to the Chinese economy when production grinds to a halt. see how long the Communists can stay in power then. in the end it will be the Army itself that overthrows the Communist party. yes, the Army because the Army is the true power behind the totalitarian rule. when support from the Army goes, the Communists are done.

Waco,
I get your perspective.
But if the central party leadership makes a decision that gets folks upset, thousands of dead civies with the red army in control means the civies have lost. So what will Peking decide? They're going after individuals to force folks into conformity

the Red Army can't control tens of millions. what happens when the Communist party issues shoot to kill orders? would the Army kill 20 million people to maintain control? would the common soldier kill citizens by the hundreds of thousands knowing that another soldier somewhere else is killing their family members? China is not stupid. they would send troops to other areas such that they would not be forced to confront their friends, neighbors or even family members. but they are going to know that is exactly what is happening in their hometowns.

the military is always the core support for a Communist regime. without it, total control can't be maintained. remember history. once most of the Generals and thus the army failed to support Czar Nicolas II Imperial rule of Russia was over.

same with China today. the Generals can issue all the orders they want. if the common solider refuses to kill millions to put down a nationwide revolt then it's over. Some Colonels will simply shoot the Generals and then the ruling party members. that's what happens in every military coup throughout history.
