Died today at age 82 I was watching the 6pm news and was shocked to see that he will be known as the best astronaut ever

OK, I have to ask, why would anyone be shocked? He was the first to step foot on the moon. From what I understand this caused Buzz Aldrin to be a bit miffed.

Just curious, what criteria is needed to be consider for the "best astronaut ever"?

I don't know about "the best", but, with his cool piloting skills under tremendous pressure, he saved Gemini 8 from a thruster malfunction disaster and landed Apollo 11 manually in difficult terrain with fuel running out.
