Recent Gallup Poll indicates a decline in stock ownership by Americans......from the high in 2007 (65.5%) dropping to its current level of 52% today.

The reason(s) for the decline? While there's a number of them the most significant one (stated by most in the poll) was "fear and mistrust". Once burned, twice shy it would appear has taken hold.

You'd think Americans were putting their money (if not into the market) into something else....real estate perhaps. But numbers don't seem to indicate that is happening either: today 63% of all Americans own real estate in one fashion or another. That number, also, has declined from the high of 69% in 2007.

I apologize for the "dating" on the graph below...I did try to find a more up-to-date one but it'll do until someone can find a more recent one:

A more likely reason is simplistic: A lot of folks lost their nice full time jobs and had to dip into their 401Ks to keep up with the Joneses and maintain their lifestyle. Lower pay and to prevent the spouse from going to work and putting the kids into day care.

Any "mistrust" was more than likely due to the Obaminable administration's fake war on Wallstreet and financial companies with the concern they would lose what they had stashed away, so better to take it out and either diversify or invest in something more tangible and controllable even if it meant a downturn in earnings.

the bailout of wall street companies may have been a factor in the decline.
