there was an uproar over bear byrant's alabama team playing an integrated penn state team in the 1959 liberty bowl

bryant received a telegram from a citizen's council in alabama saying something like "we oppose alabama playing an integrated team. we hope this has been taken care of for the tide belongs to all of alabama and alabama favors segregation"

he ignored the telegram

joe namath played quarterback at alabama under bryant from1962 to 1964

joe came to alabama from beaver falls, pennsylvania where he had been the only white starter on the high school's basketball team

he came to alabama where there were few blacks in the school (first black to attend the university of alabama was in 1956), not sure what joe thought of that at the time, or even if it was in his mind. as a kid sometimes you just live.

it wasn't until 1967 that a few blacks were walk on's and tried out with the team

although bryant recruited black players prior to this, Wilbur Jackson was the first black player to sign with Alabama in, I think, 1969. wikipedia says he was the first black player offered a scholarship, but I think they have that wrong.

Looking back (as many football historians have mused) Chicago fans are still left with the frustration of only one Super Bowl appearance and championship from that group. With so much talent and so many first-team All Pros (let alone those who ended up in Canton) how could they only make it to the Big Game once?
Yeah 44-0 was the final score. Ditka felt bad and actually apologized to Tom Landry for kicking their asses so badly, lol. I think it was Richard Dent that caused the most trouble for the Cowboy's Offense.

But they all had a lot of heart. Maybe misfits is a bit harsh. They were just a group of fun loving guys that knew how to win. They had fun, these players today they don't know how to have fun. Namath with his white cleats and his fur jackets, lol. They were entertainers.

Jim
Ditka and Ryan may have been the biggest misfits.

Hahaha, yeah, they didn't always get along. Ryan had something with that 46 Defense. I don't think we'll ever see a team like that again.

The 46 was great for one year. Just like the Grits Blitze in Atlanta. Gimmicky. Marino exposed it. The following year they weren't so good. The Steel Curtain is still the best unit over time. It was a different era. But the other teams still had the same rules to build a D like that. Their 1976 D may have been the greatest ever.
