Default Baton Rouge #2 in HIV with New Orleans as #3

Brix Fowler Reporter
Jan 17, 2013 6:00 p.m.

Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) -
Another list topper for the Capitol City, and it's not a good one - Baton Rouge is number two in the country in new HIV cases.

According to a report released by the Centers for Disease Control, Baton Rouge has 52 cases for every 100,000 people.

Even though the statistics are from 2010, the Baton Rouge AIDS Society says if something isn't done about it soon, we'll rank at the top of the list.

"We've always been in the top ten. So when you look at number two or number one, it's not a big difference - that's been going to go back and forth over the years," stated A.J. Johnson with the BR AIDS Society. "What we are doing (to prevent new cases) isn't enough."

Thats some scary stuff there! Did they mention in the report the statistics of how these people came to have HIV? Drug use, unprotected sex?

not so shocking when there are providers with HIV still being reviewed!

I saw that on the news today, Miami is the #1 city. I would imagine those stats includes every way possible to become infected.

No mention as to the primary means of transmission. We all just need to be safe.

As for the comment that providers with HIV are still being reviewed, that is truly scary. Not sure how to combat this issue. Thoughts?

Not quite sure. I would hope that the people of this site can act like responsible adults and not make this hobby any riskier than it already is. Namely, get screened often, use protection and limit risky behavior (drug use, unprotected sexual acts ect.)

Lolita, thats scary part, providers who dont use protection. Any lady that advertises very low rates is a read flag to me, and ANY lady that does have HIV, is information that NEEDS to be made public.

Either way u look at it, this industry is still risky. While I don't condone bbfs, it's basically the same risk with bbbj.

I disagree Mina. The risk of transmitting HIV via bbbj is so low there isnt even a valid statistic on it. In order to transfer HIV the female has to 1) have his cum/precum in her mouth, and 2) have an open sore in her mouth to receive the HIV. If there is a statistic I believe its like .01% or less

from our friends at the cdc:

"While no one knows exactly what the degree of risk is, evidence suggests that the risk is less than that of unprotected anal or vaginal sex......

If the person performing oral sex has HIV, blood from their mouth may enter the body of the person receiving oral sex through
  • the lining of the urethra (the opening at the tip of the penis);
  • the lining of the vagina or cervix;
  • the lining of the anus; or
  • directly into the body through small cuts or open sores.
If the person receiving oral sex has HIV, their blood, semen (cum), pre-seminal fluid (pre-cum), or vaginal fluid may contain the virus. Cells lining the mouth of the person performing oral sex may allow HIV to enter their body."

I can see the first one (the lining of the urethra) being very plausible....

Wow. Mandy's comment is scary, and I wish there could be names to go along with that information as there should definitely be alerts to all, but then I guess without proof it would all just be hearsay slander.

Also just a side note, in Baton Rouge 75% of the cases are among AA. This isn't the national average but it is the average in Baton Rouge. with 31% of new cases being among females with heterosexual activities being the number one cause. So that means 69% of new cases are among men with presumably homosexual sex and/or IV drug use being their number one causes.

Isn't one of the main reasons BR stays high on the list because they include HIV infections from all of the prison inmates that are transported to BR for medical treatment from all over southern LA?

With the infection rates among those populations being in our numbers, I would think that would adversely skew the numbers since it raises our ratio per capita, even though they aren't actually residents of the GBR area.
