Coming to NOLA - need recommendations

I know this isn't a tourism board, but sometimes it's a better idea to check out the local party scene with locals... so here goes:

Coming to NOLA soon -- haven't been since the storm -- and I'm looking for some good music. Outside of the Quarter and Garden districts I'm kinda lost. Would like to get out of those areas, too.

Looking for funk and jazz.

A good soul food recommendation would also be appreciated!

Soul food? That's easy... hands down - Praline Connection on Frenchman Street. Just couple of blocks from da Quarter. Plan on making several trips there. Frenchman St also has a THRIVING music scene.

Also - Lil' Dizzy's Cafe at 1500 Esplanade Ave - never been there myself, but I've heard good things about it - but that neighborhood's a little shaky - I'd take a cab there.
