They will again and again assert that many different things Trump has done were crimes when they were not. They will begin proceedings because their base demands it based on what they're hearing on CNN and MSNBC.

But over and over again when the lawyers get involved it will turn out that none of these are crimes. The extortion payments to porn stars will turn out not to be campaign violations, there will be no statute against collusion with foreign governments, the emuluments accusations will go nowhere because Trump never actually built any hotels in Russia, and nothing will stick about the Russian hacking of Hilary's emails because Trump had nothing to do with it.

In the end the Republican base will be so energized over this that they will rally around Trump and there will be no way he will lose.

The Democrats will put forward someone who is a part of all this bullshit and he/she will be tarred with what the public will see as an attempted coup.

Trump will win.

And I am the one who has been saying since the day after America made a huge mistake and elected this guy that the Dems would win win the midterms, this was two years in advance.

Right now Trump is covered in shit, that is why members of his own party are distancing themselves from him. No way this guy stands a chance of winning anything if he is abandoned by his own party.

So my bold prediction for 2020 is that a "Ross Perot like" third candidate who will appeal to moderate conservatives will play a huge role in the election, and no matter who the Dems nominate (hopefully it will be O' Rourke) they will win in a landslide.

No way Trump will win.

The Republicans were soundly beaten in the 2018 mid-terms. In House voting, Democrats won the popular vote by 8.6 million, the most since 1974.

With that said, one should never underestimate the Trump voting base. They will be faithful no matter what. They will rally strongly in 2020. Trump has plenty of time to reverse the ship.
His character will never change so that will continue to be a negative except with his base.

The next 22 months leading up to the election should be interesting.

Trump supporter here and I predict he will win in 2020.
If the stars align correctly - it will be Biden/Beto.
And Trump will wipe the floor with them without breaking a sweat. No problem.
I was hoping for Warren but it seems even her own party thinks she's a loon. Damn.

Now if a third independent candidate comes forward - that would be a game changer. However, I don't see one yet.

It will be so interesting. Again!!

Wow. How this went from 41 to how Trump is winning next election.

Trump just lost his chance at building that Wall when Congress changed the other day. Why is our government shut down over a Wall that he said Mexico is paying for?

Another lie?

I agree that the Trump base will show up come election time. But his base makes up a very small percentage of the electorate. If there's one thing 2016 has taught us is that no matter how strong a candidate one is, without full support of ones own party, one will lose.

And the Trump base is very few, and will get crushed handidly without the support of the blue collar Democrats in Michigan & Wisconsin like they had in 2016. Unlike the 2016 election, the cry baby Bernie Sanders supporters will get off their lazy asses and vote for whoever we nominate this election.

2020 will be an easy victory for the Dems, no matter who we nominate.

Didn't you say that Hillary would again be the Democratic nominee in 2020? Reversed your field already?

Republicans got thoroughly beaten in 2018 midterms and in my opinion much of it was due to Trump's character, which the Trump base loves (i.e. Ellen) but most hate. No matter what Trump accomplishes over the next 2 years, he will always be carrying that negative with him. He won't change.

If I had to make a prediction at this time, I agree with you that Trump faces a very uphill battle to be re-elected. He won the states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin by the thinnest of margins and that carried him to victory. In 2018 voters in those states went heavy Democratic.

After the trouncing Republicans took last November, with Democrats taking the popular vote by 8.7 million after Trump had lost the popular vote by 2.8 million in 2016, why do you think Trump will win in 2020? What states that went Democratic in 2016 do you see going Republican in 2020? Do you think that Trump will hold onto Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Arizona in 2020, despite them going Democratic big time in 2018? Since he's been elected, Trump has focused on his base which is sort of dumb since his base will always support him. What do you think he will do to appeal to the 60% of the voters who do not approve of him?

I don't mind at all that people support Trump and believe he will be re-elected in 2020. What I would like to understand is WHY people think that way. Not just "I love him because he's Donald Trump". Specifics would be helpful.

Oh I think she will scurry into the race somehow. But I think the Dem party is smart enough not to nominate her.

The short answer is I think he will win in 2020 because there are not any Dem candidates who can beat him. As of yet.

The progressives in the House are going to rip their party apart. You can already see it happening now. It will be interesting to see how that plays out. I can tell you - middle America doesn't like it. And that's the area in play for the 2020 election.

And I don't see anything wrong with Trumps character. I knew who he was before he got elected and he was no saint - by a long shot. He was elected to do a job and he's doing it.

Personally. I'm just going to sit back and watch the show.

AOC is new on the scene.
To tell you the truth, I haven't listened or kept track of what she has said or done.
I know this Lady is going to make a few mistakes. And I know she probably seems pretty out there.
But I think she will learn from them and be able to make use of her new blood in Congress. I tend to hate change but people on the Hill shouldn't be scared of it. I'm willing to give her a chance.

Going Dem in a local or state election is not the same as in a presidential election. Trump won because he was less disgusting than Clinton, not because most people liked him or even tolerated his BS. The voters were given a horrid choice.

Trump has proven to be a pathological liar (Mexico IS paying, the federal workers SUPPORT being out of work, the federal workers are on strike, all the past presidents support me, the military has received no raises for 10 years, etc., etc., etc.) than expected, and he is willing to throw anyone and everyone under the bus while telling them he is helping them.

I agree with Ellen, the middle is the issue in the election. Trump will win his one third of deaf/self-focused/brainwashed/bigots (you have to be one of the four to be blind Trump supporter, but not all four) and whoever the Dems nominate will get one third who are equally tromping to the polls with minimal thought. The other third will decide, but unfortunately many of them have walked away from both parties and thus minimal say in the nominations.

If the Dems don't self destruct by selecting a fringe wacko they should do very well in 2020. But I will never again underestimate the self destructive tendencies of either party.

Actually, I love that quote--it is so absolutely correct. It is also correct if you put in "Dems" and "Reps" instead--of course each side doesn't see their own follies and lies. She is new and energetic. She will be changed by life in DC for good or bad, but I think there is something there that could grow into something good. We shall see.

By the way, Ellen, I assume you think that quote is dumb. But read some actual history of uncontained capitalism OR socialism, and find examples that did not oppress people.

Marx was wrong about his answer, but he was not wrong about the ills of unrestrained capitalism.
