There's several statutes that are involved here. If Cohen secretly recorded the conversation, that could violate attorney-client privilege and it's against the law to record someone without their knowledge unless you have a warrant!

Karen McDougal is one of 19 women who, prior to the 2016 election, accused Donald Trump of unwanted sexual advances. At that time Trump denied the charges of all 19 and none of the allegations could be substantiated. So it was innocent until proven guilty.
If the tapes prove that in fact Trump did have sexual relations with McDougal and agreed with Cohen to pay her off, that puts into question 17 of the 18 others who claimed sexual harassment. Stormy Daniels is a closed case.
I doubt that even it came out that Trump had sexual relations of some type with all 19 that it would do much harm to him.

Violation attorney-client privilege and it's against the law to record someone without their knowledge unless you have a warrant. The violation can only occur if there is ongoing crime, warrant depends on the state.
