Default California to legalize eating roadkill

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/ca...QrW?li=BBnbcA1

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill last weekend, making it legal to cook and eat roadkill, according to several reports.

The “roadkill bill,” (Senate Bill 395) which goes into effect in 2022, will allow people to salvage and eat animals they unintentionally hit or find on the road in the state, KCAL-TV reported.

Those wanting to eat the roadkill would need to obtain a salvage permit in exchange for information about the animal, where and how it was killed in an effort to eliminate waste of carcasses and to better understand how to make roads safer for drivers and animals.
CALIFORNIA BAN ON NEW FUR PRODUCTS IS FIRST IN US
“When you look at the statistics, the number of injuries and accidents and fatalities, it’s about time,” State Sen. Bob Archuleta, D-Pico Rivera, said, according to KCAL. “If we can save one life, save one animal, I think we’ve done the right thing here."
University of California, Davis estimates 20,000 deer are killed on California roadways each year, but no department officially tracks the numbers, The Mercury News reported.
“We desperately need systematic data reporting on vehicle collisions with wildlife in California, and CalTrans isn’t going to do it unless directed to by statute,” Brian Nowicki with the Center for Biological Diversity, said, according to The Mercury News.
Under the law, if the animal is still alive the Department of Fish and Wildlife will decide whether or not to put it down.
Opponents of the bill say that it could lead to some drivers purposefully striking animals in the road.

Eating roadkill is currently illegal under state law and “unlawful possession of wildlife” could carry a $6,000 fine and six months in jail, although it is rarely cited, KQED reported.

The idiocy of Kalifornia never ceases to amaze
One must obtain a "salvage permit" to eat roadkill.

Wonder how the Kalifornia bureaucracy will respond to those permit requests.

Unless filed by an illegal alien - in which case the permit will doubtless be expedited and include free housing, college, medical care, and immunity from prosecution for any and all crimes committed in the Sanctuary Socialist State of Kalifornia.

Or perhaps Gov Gruesome is trying to improve the diet of his constituency.
BTW - Gruesome's favorite holiday approaches - halloween!!!

Ok, so to feed the immigrants?

Seriously though, if the critter is picked up just after, doesn't have any issues other than being hit by vehicle instead of killed by hunter, or butcher, that's not a problem.
Other states have similar laws.

The issue is going to be that the "permits" would be needed within an hour or so of vehicle strike and there's no way the state can respond that quickly.

I agree the permitting process seems unworkable.

But it seems to me that people will just toss the animal in the back of their truck and go.

Yeah but you probably knew how to cook it. I doubt those mutants in California know what they are doing.

PETA should team up with the ACLU and bring a class action lawsuit on behalf of all of the Buzzards who depend on roadkill for their survival.

Only once was I stopped. But I called the DNR gal I know and handed my com to the deputy who nodded his head and said ok a few times. Only thing he then said was she wants to know if going to be processed today (Yes).

Yes, need to know how to etc. It's becoming a lost art (outside of mass market factory approach).

I had Roadkill once. It was a young Deer that was hit by a car. A friend of mine just happened to ride up on a traffic accident involving a Deer. One night he said he wanted to grill some Deer meat, I thought he went hunting, he told me the story about the wreck and the guy who hit the Deer helped him put in the back of his Truck and he took it some place to have it butchered. That's the extent of my experience with Roadkill. I've never had anything like Opossum, Armadillo, Skunk or Raccoon.

In Alaska - moose, bear, etc injured or killed accidentally are dispatched by State Troopers and donated for processing to the needy.

Well I think the major factor in that is those animals are huge. I doubt even three men are going to through a Moose or a Bear in the back of a pick up. A 125 lb Deer wouldn't take much.
