It has everything to do with General Flynn. The whole thing was a set up. Comey even admitted as much in an interview. Second, they knew they couldn't just goose step into the White House to sniff around Trump's butt, but could use this as leverage. Third, this was the first leg of the Muh RUSSIA witch hunt.

by doing this, they've committed an act of sedition against a sitting president. they succeeded in delaying the inevitable by 3 years.
