You don't get it. The country was strongly isolationist prior to Dec. 7, 1941. There is no way FDR could have mobilized the nation and demanded it sacrifice for a war most Americans opposed. After Pearl Harbor public opinion swung 180 degrees. Millions of Americans volunteered for military service - literally overnight.
