It looks like politicians are coming around. If I understand correctly, the Florida governor is going to have police meet New Yorkers as they step off the plane, and they will be escorted to locations where they will spend the next 14 days away from friends and family. The Trump administration is suggesting travelers from New York City voluntarily isolate themselves for 14 days. And all USA airlines are looking at a couple of options, either voluntarily stopping most domestic flights or being prepared when the government mandates that. Their crews have been on the front lines.

Kudos to Governor Abbott. He has directed that travelers from the following places be quarantined for 14 days.

Washington state
New York
New Jersey
Connecticut
Louisiana
Atlanta
Chicago

They're a bit too harsh on Abbott, although he shouldn't have hamstrung the counties and cities and should have pushed contact tracing and testing more. Everyone agrees now, including Abbott, that the bars should have stayed closed.

Tiny - with Grocery stores, gun shops, food delivery services, USPS, and many other services and places for people to congregate pen (essential services) - I think it selective enforcement to blame and close bars.

Show me a good study where open bars caused an increase in Wuhan virus - tempting to attribute the recent uptick in cases in Texas - but i see no Proof of that - Nor good evidence that closing bars alone - while maintaining open other 'essential services' - will cause a drop in the virus incidence.

People are out walking their dogs, ignoring 6 foot separation, masks are at best a minority of the population in Texas.



The Virus is already many steps ahead - out of the box - beyond control with contact tracing.

The best we can do - perhaps - is slow it down a bit to not overwhelm hospitals and ICU beds.



Meanwhile - bar owners are getting slammed economically - and preferentially. .

Oeb, I doubt there's a study, but Governor Abbott's thoughts expressed in interviews make a lot of sense:

If I could go back and redo anything, it probably would have been to slow down the opening of bars, now seeing in the aftermath of how quickly the coronavirus spread in the bar setting," Abbott said during an evening interview with KVIA in El Paso.

Abbott added that the "bar setting, in reality, just doesn't work with a pandemic," noting people "go to bars to get close and to drink and to socialize, and that's the kind of thing that stokes the spread of the coronavirus."

In a subsequent interview with WFAA in Dallas, Abbott reiterated regret over the pace of bar reopenings, calling it an "easy thing to pinpoint" as he looks back on the process.

And this is from Friday, when he announced the closings,

“At this time, it is clear that the rise in cases is largely driven by certain types of activities, including Texans congregating in bars," Abbott said Friday morning. "The actions in this executive order are essential to our mission to swiftly contain this virus and protect public health."

If we keep on the current course, Texas hospitals will become overloaded in the weeks to come. This was a good move by Abbott. So was allowing cities and counties to fine businesses that allow patrons on their premises without masks.

I do disagree with the "over-emphasis" of clsoing bars to blunt the inexorable wuhan virus advance - when so many other concerns are open and potentially/actually spreading virus around .
People are getting fed up - and civil disobedience is on the rise - something the "authorities " should be cautious about.

I remember when myself and a couple others were remarking how well Texas had done, in thwarting the virus.. A group of bar owners in Texas filed lawsuits Monday in an attempt to overturn Gov. Greg Abbott's (R) order closing their businesses in an effort to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus as cases in the state spike.

The lawsuits filed in Austin, Houston and Galveston allege that Abbott does not have the authority to make such an order and claim it specifically targets bars while other businesses, such as salons and tattoo parlors, are allowed to remain open, The Associated Press reported.
The bar owners reportedly said Abbot should call the legislature into a special session to address the issue.
"Gov. Abbott continues to act like a king," Jared Woodfill, an attorney for the bar owners, told the AP. "Abbott is unilaterally destroying our economy and trampling on our constitutional rights."

The Hill has reached out to Abbott's office for comment.
On Friday, Abbott announced an order to reimpose some restrictions as the number of cases in the state spiked. The order requires bars to shut down by noon on Friday, and reined back restaurants, allowing them to only operate at 50 percent capacity.
Several states have halted reopening plans amid spikes, but Texas was the first to reimpose restrictions that had been lifted.
Over the weekend, Abbott expressed regret for allowing bars to reopen.

On your thread that asked if Texas opened too early, I was on record as yes. It did. Just for the record. I think Abbot is a mental cripple. Putting money over lives.
