I hated tricky Dick but mostly because he doubled the death count of Americans in Viet Nam for no good reason. Watergate was just a symptom of his parnoia. Troubled man, sad really. But the guy was a liberal: wage and price controls, the EPA, affirmative action, opening up relations with China. He'd have to be a Democrat today.

I left the republican party in 2008 though they had already left me. I was a Goldwater-Reagan republican. Needless to say that party is long gone. Now I'm an independent and among the 30% of Americans not wanting to associate with either party. Bush and his fellow republicans really damaged themselves in the last decade. I'm sure part of the reason Obama won is due to the Bush hangover many people are still feeling. I don't feel sorry for the reps at all. They did it to themselves.

I liked Palin but had trouble seeing her as presidential. But to be fair Obama brought very little to the table as far as presidential qualifications. McCain had far more more qualifications for president but his party messed up so bad he couldn't have defeated anyone.

I don't know, tricky Dick today might make a good RINO. Certainly a strange dude.

Vietnam goes back to FDR.

Palin, by far, was the best looking VP candidate in history. Too bad she is also dumber than a box of rocks.

true. But it was LBJ that started sending lots of troops. even under JFK we did not have many there. LBJ started sending more men stepping it up after winning the prez job over Goldwater. Yet in his campaign de-escalation of nam was what he was sayin. Goldwater was the hawk in the campaign. LBJ won in a landslide. After the election keep sending more and more men. looking like doing what Goldwater wanted to do if he won.

so served out the JFK term. Won over Goldwater then next time the vote was coming

Nixon wins over Humphrey in a close vote.

Nixon ups bombing in 1973 errr or was that 72. mmmm but are troops pulled in 73.

next year I get my draft card. but there was no draft. mmmm I still have my draft card.

Back then if you where over 18 (almost at times) you did not want to do anything that would send you to court. Many a judge at time of sentence would give you a choice of 3 things. Jail, Army, Marines if they would take ya. Most picked the military over jail.

The courts did that well into the 80s.
