Elon is doing his usual mix of aspirational dreaming and pressuring his people, hoping desperately someone can come up with a battery of sufficient energy density to make solar and wind more viable.
The energy equivalent of Tesla's 2000 pound battery is about 3-4 gallons of gas, though Tesla's efficient electric motor can turn that into about 300 miles until the battery degrades too much.
You would need 10-12 gallons of fuel, which weighs about 80-85 pounds, to propel a nice Mercedes E class about the same distance on a highway. For half the price, I'll take the Mercedes.
