as it relates to Africa..... the topic of the thread. Militarily in the recent past we are "johnny-come-latelies" in comparison to the French in the area and they have maintained a number of bases of operation primarily toward the Eastern portion of Africa, although they have had some presence to the West.

I think we asked their assistance not long ago 10 to 15 years or so to help some students "get out of town" in Central Africa during a local uprising.

The amazing thing is that it is the FRENCH taking action to begin with. Showing some balls for a change.

No need. Just arrest the producers.

It seems quite a few Brits and other nationalities have been executed in Algeria.

Algeria turned down an offer from the UK for specialist SAS units.

I don;t know what other offers of help, from the US and others, the Algerians turned down.

Maybe long term it is best that countries develop their own anti-terrorist capabilities and don't have to come to the US/UK all the time for assistance.

What the French are doing in Mali, Afghanistan, Quebec, Timbucktoo, is of no interest to me vis a vis Algeria. The cuisine in the compound I stayed at in Algeria was certainly not French, unless it was cheveaux (which is another story entirely).

I knew a dancer who thought England was in London.

Maybe he thinks Africa is in Algeria?

Well, what French were doing in Mali (beating the hell out of the rebels) was certainly of interest to the Algerian terrorists who claimed the attack was in retaliation for the French involvement in Mali.

A few weeks ago there was a thread about increases US troop presence in Africa as non-combatant advisors. The general response this board was that "oh oh, here's another Vietnam fiasco in the making. Of course the article didn't discuss the unspoken corollary that with the troops come the CIA and Its contractors who will do the special ops stuff that the regular troops can't do.

Where are those naysayers now because this bunch wants to blame the president for terrorism in a sovereign state? And BTW, each boot on the ground and drone in the air costs the American taxpayers a lot. You can't have a robust military and not spend money.

The terrorists are as some of you guys. They believe that the U.S., Europe and the African Union is a monolithic group and that they can seize hostages anyplace in the world and demand the release of hostages from anyplace in the world. They think we are all crusader devils. On our side of the divide some think all terrorists are cut from the same cloth and have a unified structure.

This is gonna be a 100 year war all over the world.

All the hostages and the terrorists are dead. Didn't look like there was an effort by the Algerians to surgically remove the terrorists without harming the hostages. Reports says some hostages were wearing bomb vests. I guess getting the plant running was more important.

Hey, i'va bigheadinjury: do you or your helper monkey respond to these posts?

My only question to you was (and is) on what basis do you conclude that no French personnel are in Algeria ...

.... some on here apparently thought the French had left Afghanistan as well. No?

Or do you rely on NBC for your factual information?

If you do I understand, Essence relies on the BBC.*

*Which reported BTW during the early stages of the now unpopular re-invasion in 2003 that the U.S. was getting her collective ass kicked by the Iraqis.

Just food for thought:

Did the news media know the "terrorists" were in Algeria preparing to execute a raid on the gas plant? And if so, why didn't they report that the "terrorists" were staging in Algeria for a raid on ... some location .... may be a gas plant in Algeria.... may be some other AFRICAN country? And more importantly, why didn't the Algerians know the "terrorists" were in their country preparing for a raid "on ... some location .... may be a gas plant in Algeria.... may be some other AFRICAN country?"

Apparently you were not conscious (or alive) in the early going in S.E. Asia before the news media was aware (even the incoming Kennedy) that we had miliary personnel on the ground and in the air over SE Asian COUNTRIES .. and that "trend" has been pretty much the situation through out the military and intelligence history of the United States since WWI.

Telegraphing to the enemy one's presence by informing the news media is not healthy and it is a poor strategy for a succesful operation,...... including scheduled troop withdrawals, also.

Is your purpose in posting an attempt to show other people are not as smart as you?
