You are at serious financial and criminal risk when you keep any animal that has already biten a human (or another animal for that matter) in Texas. The animal is considered presumptively a "dangerous" animal and your liaiblity and exposure is almost automatic.

Just food for thought.

And people wonder why I have chihuahuas? As old as they are now, all 6 of them at one time couldn't even gum a gopher to death.

Seriously, sorry that happened to you, especially with an animal you're attached to, Chislaine. Irish luck and blessings for a quick recovery.

Just as a point of fact, ANY dog can fear bite or lose track of who they are biting in a confrontation. Pit bulls get more bad PR just because they are such powerful dogs who can inflict a lot of damage.

Interesting site I ran across:
http://www.maniacworld.com/Pit-Bull-Myths.html

Pit Bull Myths

This video covers the sad myths about American Pit Bull Terriers.
  • Myth 1: Any pit bull will fight. Not true, some pit bulls can't even grasp the idea of being violent.
  • Myth 2: All pit bulls are HUMAN aggressive and even bite their owners. Actually, pit bulls are one of the only breeds to be non-human aggressive. (They're more likely to be aggressive with other pits, hence they are the favored breed for the "sport" of dogfighting. However, ALL dogs, even chihuahuas, will fight for some reason or another, and it is the nature of canines to chase and sometimes torment creatures they perceive as weak or afraid. Conditioning and training from birth are crucial to break this tendency. As a rule, nice folks have nice dogs, bad guys make dogs bad.)
  • Myth 3: Only people of a deviant nature with something to hide or protect own pit bulls. The pictures in this video show otherwise. (See link.)
  • Myth 4: Pit bulls are the most aggressive dog. In studies, the cocker spaniel and collies even scored worse than a pit bull. (My Irish granny had to go to the ER for stitches after my aunt's cocker got weirded out playing and bit her in the face.)
More Dog Facts here. Take a look here at a Pit Bull Playing With Chicks. (Too cute!)

Thancks for posting the facts Fancy.
I grew up in an area where dog fighting was prevalent. Some of my friends had pit bulls that they fought or intended to fight. They were some of the most lovable dogs. Very loyal and loved people. Many times they would have to be "made mean". I won't go into the process of doing that other than to say it wasn't pretty.

Pits do tend to have dog aggression which makes it easier to fight them. A pair of alpha's will usually find their pecking order but two alpha females will never get along. Like any other dog breed they are a pack animal and live by the rules of nature unless taught otherwise.

Their bite is devastatingly powerful but they usually must be made to want to bite. People who don't know much about them fear them because they have been told wrongfully that they are aggressive but I don't thinck they are anymore aggressive than any other breed has the chance of being. It depends on environment and genetics. What gets them so much negative publicity is that when they do become aggressive they have the potential to do way more damage than a Cocker Spaniel or a Collie.

Of course that's just a cat's perspective.

I wish her well. On a side note, there is great love for animals, especially man's best friend. But to put Pit bulls in the same category as a dog is a mistake. It's more like domesticating a racoon. Sooner or later, you're most likely gonna get bit.
