He was there because there was a call for folks to provide security to some businesses who didn't want to get trashed by a bunch of privileged, angry white kids who were looking for an excuse to cause mayhem, which, btw, were the people causing most of the violence and destruction in all these cities.

He was also providing medical attention to anyone who needed it, his fellow security folks as well as protestors.

1st guy tried to attack him and take his weapon - self defense justified.

2nd guy tried to repeatedly hit him with a skateboard - a lethal weapon - self defense justified

3rd guy after physically assaulting him, feigned surrender, and then pulled a gun - self defense justified.

worth pointing out as well that he wasn't engaging the crowd, but retreating. He didn't go looking for the fight, the fight came to him.
