This WSJ editorial answers the question I just asked:

China’s Stealth Carrier Program

Beijing doesn’t like to talk about its plans to project naval power.

April 26, 2017 7:00 p.m. ET

China sent another signal on Wednesday that it intends to project military power across the region with the launch of its second aircraft carrier. When it completes sea trials in several years, the new ship will be China’s first operational carrier. The existing Liaoning, built using a Soviet-era hull and launched in 2012, is used only for training.

Yet despite the prestige of joining the exclusive aircraft-carrier club, Beijing remains virtually silent about the program. This lack of transparency suggests the People’s Liberation Army hopes potential adversaries continue to underestimate its future capabilities.

The flattop’s construction was widely reported abroad, since it was obvious even to casual visitors to the port of Dalian. Yet until the People’s Daily announced it last December, the ship’s existence remained a state secret.

As always, the lack of information fed speculation. Many experts believe that China aims to build five more carriers over the next decade. That would allow it to have two at sea at any time while conducting maintenance and training on the others in port.

One theory is that China intends to use its carriers to show the flag and intimidate smaller countries in the region. At least for the foreseeable future, the ships would be vulnerable and of little use in a conflict with technologically superior U.S. and Japanese forces.

The PLA has also shown that even the most powerful carriers have limitations. It developed a potent strategy of asymmetric naval warfare using relatively inexpensive weapons such as mines and antiship missiles. The idea behind this strategy of “area denial” is that the U.S. will be reluctant to send ships into Chinese coastal waters in the event of a conflict. The irony is that once China has its own carriers, such tactics could be turned against it by smaller adversaries such as Taiwan and Vietnam.

Despite their vulnerability and the immense cost to develop the technology, Beijing nevertheless presses ahead with carriers. A logical conclusion is that the PLA is looking decades ahead to when China’s economy is projected to be the largest in the world and could support the military needed for superpower status.

Beijing’s silence as the PLA deploys new weapons suggests a return to a traditional strategic culture of deception. Neighboring countries are expressing alarm that China seems to want to restore its premodern dominance over the region. Wednesday’s carrier launch will reinforce their concern.

bahhaaaa
the carrier killer missile, shkval, flies so fast, they have trouble controlling the direction of the missle. so, its not guaranteed that it'll hit something.

the missile, btw, is a 1950's design. An updated version came out just a few years ago. USN has known about that problem for decades.

I get the feeling Trump would love to see Li'L Kim try it.

... and he'll "go silent" anyway!

"A problem" is .. guess who cleans up the "mess" when their failed launch of a nuclear warhead falls back in their lap and "dirties" up the place? Chinese? No! Russians? No? Europeans? No?

I was listening to commentary on ABC last eavning, and here is their conclusion.

North Korea could destroy Seoul, the capital of South Korea, in a few hours with he massive amount of conventional artillery they have just over the border. There are 25 million people in the Seoul metro area.

So, any action against North Korea would have to be without warning, and massive enough to destroy the bulk of this artillery in a matter of minutes.

The US probably has data on how many MOABs, or similar non Nuclear Weapons, it would take to accomplish this, and what the logistics would be in delivering them.

The alternative is to do nothing, and allow Kim Jung-su to finally get a Fission Bomb that can be put on a rocket, and of course, a rocket to deliver it. Then he can blackmail the World any time he wants.

China is the key. 90 % of North Korea's economy is dependent on China. China needs to decide if it can live with a North Korea that has a viable Nuclear Option.

It's amazing that things have come to this. It seems History has a way of repeating.

The only thing Kim will be sinking is a few dozen hamburgers. This sort of delusional shit happens when you commit incest with your dead father.

this is not true. unfortunately, it is a myth that NK can destroy Seoul.

something 80-90% of their artillery do not have the range to hit Seoul. they would have to get really close to the DMZ to get that result.

Its their heavy artillery with 200mm caliber, can do some damage, but they don't have alot of them really to destroy Seoul.

Here is an interesting link.

https://www.stratfor.com/analysis/ho...ould-retaliate

I agree, they can't destroy Seoul, but they could inflict considerable damage.

As this link says, they would then expose all of their armaments to retaliation.

That being said, I would bet the US already has every piece targeted, and could take it out in short time.

The problem is it would have to be preemptive.

To actually sink a carrier with other than a nuke, would take an explosion in a magazine or jet fuel stores or something similar if at all.
To take the carrier out of the fight is a different matter. One of our own planes could crash on deck during a landing and take out the arresting gear. If they lost 2 of the wires that would be it for flight operations and lil' kim would claim credit

When Kim got up this morning "we" knew which tooth brush he used.

Figuratively speaking, of course. Do U.S. citizens/media need to know? No. Do the U.S. citizens/media need to know how "we" know? No!

All the Chinese need to do is "stand down" ....

....and control her border with NK. Non-Interference Agreement.

The U.S. can agree to assist the Chinese in cleaning up the mess.

You're an idiot if you think we have that kind of intel in NK.

Trump has been played by the Chinese...He ran around with this currency manipulation so long that all China had to do was get NK to rattle a few swords and Trump came begging for their help!

NK has nukes. This will wind up like Kennedy's Cuba ...were it looks like we won but , remember had to remove missiles close to the USSR that was never discussed.

We will wind up giving to both China and NK to get NK to do something they will eventually have anyway.
